Manuel Hernandez, MD, MBA, FACEP, CPE

Jess Elkins is a rare and talented marketing and communications expert. I had the distinct honor of collaborating and learning from her over the course of four years. During that time I witnessed Jess blossom into an unparalleled marketing and communications expert. Jess reported directly to me. I came to count on her not only for her masterful marketing and communication skills, but also for her counsel on how to best proceed when the path forward was not always clear. When others would sit with their hands in their pockets, Jess was never afraid to tell me what I needed to hear. She did so in a manner that was constructive, helpful and that she knew I would understand. She became one of my most trusted confidants while we worked together. I knew I could trust her course and her judgement implicitly. Jess is highly adept at understanding the "why" behind the challenges that need to be solves and the corresponding stories that must emerge. She is adept at blending quantitative and qualitative information to form a point-of-view for how to tell stories that will inspire, delight and create a call to action. Moreover, Jess is expert as understanding how to pivot what she creates to different audiences who might benefit from hearing the same told told in different ways. Apart from simply being a masterful marketing and communications expert, Jess is also one of the most effective and emotionally intelligent colleagues I have ever had the pleasure to collaborate with. She is capable of leading large and diverse teams to success and has developed the added skill of being able to herd cats when the team is lost but making good time. She is polite, professional and holds herself to the highest account. Moreover, Jess is highly adept at leading / managing up, down and across, This is a rare talent in the workforce today. I think the highest praise I can bestow on Jess is that she helped me become better at my job and a better leader. Working with her was a gift for which I am immensely grateful.

Jess and I worked for two years at Kahler Slater on a number of initiatives ranging from pursuits, thought leadership, and client projects. She was, and is, the intangible glue that holds teams together, both by virtue of her impressive array of skills ranging from writing to executive-level thinking to strategy formation to graphic artistry, and her ability to think and challenge others to ask "why" and push for better. Jess has a high level of emotional intelligence and uses a creative but structured approach to firmly steer her teams to a finished product. Moreover, she is unafraid to try new things and take educated risks. As a leader or team member, Jess earns my highest recommendation. .

Marketing strategy | Internal and external communications As the first marketing staff member La Causa had as a part of their Development Department, I did an assessment of their current state and immediate needs and collaborated with executive team members to develop a path forward. I began with a consistent communications strategy and building a consistent branded experience. This included photographing all organization events, creating a consistent social media presence, and designing printed communications. I conceptualized two publications, La Causa Connection – a staff newsletter connecting six divisions with 400 staff members - and La Cause Vision – a quarterly donor print newsletter, driving an increase in donor engagement. Local food education and advocacy | Community engagement | Event coordination As the Greenfield Farmers Market was growing and becoming more well known in the community, there was a need for a Farmers Market Manager. This role was responsible for many logistics – onsite coordination, managing vendor expectation and collaborating with the committee. More importantly this role was the face of the market. It was about community engagement, connecting people to local food, education of what local food looks like, highlighting our farmers and their practices, and growing our reach. Show less

Soon after I started my role as an Administrative Assistant with the health department, it was clear the team was looking for a dynamic team member to wear many hats. I co-led efforts to start a local farmers market, from researching industry standards, identifying growth opportunities, and execution of all planning efforts. I wrote and executed a public relations plan to increase family presence by 25% and collaborated with the committee to determine grassroots marketing strategies and materials. With a focus on efficiency, I collaborated to create a quality improvement plan to create better communication and staff coverage in our environmental health program, developed a communications calendar tool, and lead external communications with our farmers market committee.
