    • Long Term Substitute Teacher
      • Aug 2013 - Oct 2013

I was a long term substitute for a 5th grade class at A.A Gates Elementary School in Port Byron, New York. As I began the position at the beginning of the school year, I assumed all of the responsibilities and duties of a full time teacher. Using the new Common Core Modules for New York State, I created and delivered lessons in the content areas of English Language Arts and Math. I followed the school's established 5th grade curriculum for science, writing, and spelling. Additionally, I utilized a variety of techniques based on the principal of positive reinforcement to manage behavior at both the class and individual level. I created, administered, and reflected upon assessments, and assumed all grading duties. I kept in close contact with students' parents or guardians about their progress in class, and met with many in person during the schools Open House Curriculum Night. Show less

    • English Teacher
      • Mar 2013 - Jul 2013

I taught English to children whose first language is Spanish in Santiago, Chile. I met with individuals or small groups of students once a week. Sessions ranged in duration from thirty minutes to one hour. I received a course plan outline and the results of an oral evaluation on each student. Given this information, I planned lessons utilizing games and interactive activities to cover the grammar points and vocabulary listed on the course outline. Classes took place in the child's home. After each class, I reflected on what was accomplished and kept track of the students' progress using a "student passport", which students were able to keep at the end of the course. This showed which objectives, or "can do statements", as the company calls them, the students were able to accomplish by the end of the semester. Show less
