As the Assistant Farm Manager, I am responsible for a number of different tasks that make our farm run. Outside, I assist with the day to day operations of seeding, transplanting, weeding, and bed prep. I assist our Vegetable Production Manager with managing the farm crew which ranges from 4-6 interns. I also manage our flower production and sales inside our two greenhouses. Behind the scenes, I schedule field trips for young students and help guide them on tours around the farm while teaching them the importance of growing and eating healthy food. I also coordinate the produce orders for our on-farm chef. In the off-season, I work with the farm's owner/general manager to create training material, update standard operating procedures, and make plans for the upcoming year to promote better growing practices on the farm as well as better business practices across all of our deparments.

    • Farm Intern
      • May 2016 - Nov 2016

My role as an intern predominately was to be a part of day to day farming operations. I learned a variety of skills such as seeding, transplanting, weeding, bed prep, crop management, disease/pest control, and distinguishing between different crop varieties. I also served inside our on-farm tasting room and provided customer service behind the bar as well as inside the cafe where we sell our own beer, wine, and farm inspired lunches.

During this time I worked with the equalization department to annotate a parcel map of Marquette Township. I learned how to understand legal descriptions and used them to individually annotate the line lengths on each parcel in the township. • Jun 2013 - Dec 2013

This was a 6 month paid internship through The Nature Conservancy to assist with the Two Hearted Watershed Sedimentation and Connectivity project. I organized photographs and also helped measure the longitudinal profile of a section of the east branch of the Two Hearted River and helped to complete a bank stabilization project along the main branch. I also helped complete designs for two bank stabilization projects and put together a bank stabilization native plants list that has been distributed throughout the region by TNC and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Later, I wrote an article and prepared a slideshow on the effects of sedimentation that are currently on The Nature Conservancy website. I culminated my research on sedimentation with a guided canoe tour down the Two Hearted River to talk about stream bank stabilization and aspects of the project taking place in the Two Hearted Watershed.
