My current position is serving as an AmeriCorps School-Based Mentor in a rural, low-income community in Colorado. I manage a caseload of eight students who are considered at-risk due to parental incarceration, substance abuse, sexual abuse, poverty and other risk factors. On a daily basis, I provide individual counseling, teach goal setting and organize community outreach programs. Moreover, I have learned fundraising and grant writing skills. Working in the DNA Resources lab, I organized and evaluated DNA samples quantitatively using fluorometry in order to create a DNAdatabase. In addition, I have contributed by further developing a method to ascertain the quality of all samples that enter the lab. Once I have assessed the quality of randomly selected samples, I work with other researchers to determine the cause of discrepancies found. Through this position, my basic laboratory, organization, data collection, and analysis skills… Show more Working in the DNA Resources lab, I organized and evaluated DNA samples quantitatively using fluorometry in order to create a DNAdatabase. The goal of my research was to determine the specific role of Albumin, the blood plasma protein, on the transfer of phospholipids among plasma lipoproteins. After two months of research and technical training, I developed a method to directly compare phospholipid transfer with and without Albumin. This experience fine-tuned my ability to analyze and effectively search for scientific literature, while developing my capacity to work independently under time constraints. Timber Lake is a two-month residential summer camp. My first two summers as a counselor, I was responsible for the full-time care of twenty fourteen year old girls. My third year, I became a Group Leader, which required overseeing the counselor staff as well as the campers and creating my own programs for the group.
