I received a summer bursary from APC Microbiome Ireland to carry out a research project under the supervision of Dr. Dervla O'Malley in the Physiology Department of UCC. During the time of this summer placement, I worked alongside Dr. O'Malley to carry out research on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). We found significant data which showed that a certain type of gastrointestinal cell (tuft cell) were more predominant in IBS-D compared to other types of IBS. During this placement, I was able to improve my laboratory skills greatly. The main experimental procedures I carried out here were: Immunoassay, Cryosections, Immunohistochemistry/Immunofluorescence, Confocal Microscopy and Statistical Analysis. Show less
