Research On Children's Knowledge of Social Thinking And Reasoning | Dr. Kimberly Vanderbilt How do children reason about ignorance and deception when making selective trust judgements? Is there a relationship between children’s selective trust judgment and their Theory of Mind? We are interested if children are able to use Theory of Mind to evaluate intentions of another person when deciding who to trust. With parental consent, we test children ranging from three- to six-years-old. We play the Finding Game and survey with the ToM Scale -- both will be counterbalanced. Four metacognitive follow-up questions will be asked about their experience with the informant at the end of each trial. How do children weigh past behavior cues against face traits? Previous research demonstrates that children attend to face-traits and past behavior cues to judge an individual's trustworthiness. The current study examined children's differential evaluation of face-traits and past behavior and whether children weigh more relevant (past behavior) over less relevant (face-traits) cues to decide whom to trust or distrust. Thirty-four children (3- to 6-year-olds) played a “searching game” with two informants who gave conflicting advice about the location of a hidden object. Children were asked to endorse a character, and answered follow-up questions regarding their explicit evaluations of each partner. Results indicated that children identified which source had been helpful in the past but did not use this knowledge to help differentiate between the sources when making trust evaluations.
