    • Director | Writer | Becoming Redwood
      • Jul 2011 - Apr 2012

Wrote | Directed the critically acclaimed festival hit Becoming Redwood. In 1969, at the height of the Vietnam War, 2 year old REDWOOD FOREST HANSON watched from the backseat of a beat up Volkswagen Van while his mother left his father at the Canadian/American border for good. At the very moment his Mother walked away, Redwood, aided with the background radio news of another JACK NICKLAUS victory, had the beginning of a stress induced epiphany: Beat JACK NICKLAUS, the world’s greatest golfer, and his parents would reunite.9 years later, 11 year old Redwood has yet to defeat Nicklaus and lives in Canada with his draft dodging, dope dealing hippie father, who cannot with all his love make life any easier for his son. School is a constant battle, and even with the aid of his two best friends – an ancient golf club and a 10 year old born-again Christian – his dreams continue to drift. To make matters worse, his father is arrested in a drug deal gone wrong and Redwood is moved to the U.S to live with his mother. His struggle continues further as his mother’s new husband is abusive, his stepbrothers are mean spirited and his only real ally is his elderly agoraphobic step-grandfather who lives in the basement. With his dreams seemingly crushed, Redwoods imagination reaches new heights and with the aid of his grandfather he’s only one shot away from defeating Jack Nicklaus, freeing his father from jail and reuniting his parents once again.

    • Director | Writer | My American Exodus
      • Mar 2010 - May 2011

Produced | Wrote | Directed the award winning documentary film My American Exodus. In 2006, after 35 years with an aversion to tofu, outright panic of Volkswagen vans and a nasty emotional reaction to Patchouli, Jesse James Miller figured out one important thing. He was allergic to Hippies. So instead of blaming them for his neuroses and the break-up of his family (free-love and a utopian experiment gone wrong) he decided to face his inner demons by taking a road trip with his father back to where he was born (a remote Island in British Columbia, Canada) to visit the last remaining hippie there, Ralph Harris. However during the trip the ride turns into an historical and personal exploration, uncovering his families roots from Hitler to Poncho Villa, while examining 1950’s consumerism, the creation of the Hippie, how his draft resisting parents came to Canada from the U.S and finally unraveling on the beach where he was born where he unearths one of the biggest unanswered questions of his life. Why his parents split up.My American Exodus uses a blend of archival footage, personal family footage (shot by his Grandfather) personal stills (shot by his Father), actuality (shot by himself) and interviews with both his parents, as he eventually turns the camera on himself unveiling a touching story about a young family that just couldn’t hold it together through the peace, free-love and rock’n’roll of the 60’s.

      • 2006 - 2006

Directed the critically acclaimed feature documentary Uganda Rising with Pete McCormack, featuring narration by Kevin Spacey.“For Children Who Have Never Known Peace, The Fight for Hope Never Ends”For two decades, the Acholi people of Northern Uganda have been caught in a civil war between a rebel group whose main objective is inhumane terror and a government whose military response has often increased misery and suffering. Over 1.5 million people have been displaced into camps and over 25,000 children have been abducted to be used as soldiers and sex slaves. And yet through it all, every day across Acholi-land something remarkable happens. Against a backdrop of dismal statistics, miniscule opportunity and unpredictable terror, in a part of Uganda forgotten by the world, children who have never known peace, face the day as if to live this way is normal, as if they still believe in the future. These children are the embodiment of resilience and hope. This film is the story of Uganda, her stolen children, and the fight to be free.
