Jess is knowledgeable about research design and evaluation, but more uniquely, she has a curiosity and openness to new ideas / approaches that just can’t be taught! She is a natural problem solver. As her manager, I came to rely on Jess’ expertise and continuous willingness to learn. Be it testing out a new research tool or teaching herself graphic design to improve the look and feel of our research products – Jess has taken on every new challenge with determination and a positive attitude. She has made impressive contributions to HEQCO’s resource library, evaluative project designs, and office culture. It is my pleasure to offer her my highest recommendation.

I had the pleasure of working with Jess on the Learning Outcomes team at the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO). From her first week, Jess stood out because of her curiosity, flexibility, and drive. During her summer internship, Jess developed expertise in areas including institutional learning outcomes in Ontario; rubric development, reliability and validity; and micro-credentials/digital badges. I was particularly impressed with her work concerning this last topic: Jess completed a thorough scan, produced valuable written material, and consulted with stakeholders. She thrived when delivering presentations to the senior executive director and to staff. Jess is a team player and a real critical thinker – and she’s whip smart. Her research skills, keen eye, communication skills, and conscientiousness are a terrific asset to any organization. I hope for the opportunity to work with Jess again!

During my time as a researcher, I conducted both primary and secondary research and supported the design of evaluation projects across a range of education-related topics. There are several examples of my work being published by HEQCO, including a book chapter, three manuals/ guides, and a report. I often presented my research internally, and sometimes externally; such as once to an audience of ~100 at the 2018 SEMM Forum, Canada's Largest Conference on Post-secondary Marketing, Recruitment & Enrolment Management. HEQCO is an agency of the Government of Ontario that brings evidence-based research to the continued improvement of the postsecondary education system in Ontario.

In addition to the standard duties of officiating soccer games across all tiers, I acted as a communication liaison between the intramural coordinator and all other soccer officials. I was responsible for leading training sessions for new and returning officials to teach rules, discuss scheduling and practice handling potentially difficult situations on the field. This role also required that I supervised games to evaluate the performance of other officials and provide feedback to both the officials and the coordinator on those assessments.

I worked with volunteers and academic members in Dr. Raptis's research lab on several ongoing projects relating to the identification of potential targets for anti-cancer drugs. I designed figures and edited research papers prior to submission. I mastered several lab techniques such as cell culturing, cell lysis and western blotting.
