Policy@manchester is an initiative which has been created to showcase the contribution of academics from The University of Manchester to public policy development in the UK. Universities act as important sources of knowledge, expertise and research for government and other policy makers. We have one of the biggest and best groups of academics engaged in such activities both in the UK and internationally, however, as we are such a large organisation this level of policy engagement can be overlooked. The Policy@Manchester initiative provides a platform to share ideas, events and other activities highlighting our wide ranging areas of public policy engagement and create new synergies between those working on them. They aim to address and support the University’s core goals by mobilising knowledge in research and teaching to influence and inform public policy and to create a focal point for public policy research and expertise at the University. I worked with academics and leaders across the University to scope, plan and deliver policy influencing campaigns and events, helping them define and develop policy positions and recommendations. I then utilise a variety mediums from blogs, publications, social media and online campaigns and communications tools to organising roundtable discussions under 'Chatham House Rules'. These influencing plans can include identifying key policy areas and issues on the political and parliamentary agenda and matching this with our expertise and research projects in order to promote evidence-based policy making and provide our academics with the skills and contacts to achieve real impact with their research.
