Selected as one of 9 student researchers to conduct a 12-week herbivore population survey across Okavango Delta region for Botswana Parks Department. Participated in herbivore road transects throughout the region, identifying plants, mammals, and avian species by learning their tracks, scat, and calls. Experience using GPS, range finder, and compass during transects. Collaborated with a team of three student researchers to spearhead the program’s first annual survey of raptor populations and their habitat preferences; presented the results with a formal research paper and with a PowerPoint presentation for local NGO directors, researchers, and program leaders. Collaborated with local residents to facilitate future herbivore surveys as part of national initiative for a community-based approach to natural resource management. Independently led class discussions on the effects of colonization on modern conservation projects and the impact of HIV/AIDS on the region’s ability to respond to climate change. Show less
