I also undertake forest maintenance at Daisy Hill Conservation Park, directed by Jim Napier (email @zulu53@iinet.com.au). Jim is a retired environmental manager who has taught me about environmental management processes and advised me on getting into the management field by explaining his career roles and personal experiences working for the council and private employers. We discussed environmental management topics, including land care, plant identification, fire, weed and water management, trail maintenance and park ranger tasks at Daisy Hill. There are only two rangers on-site during the week that cover the 500-hectare reserve, so volunteering is vital, as it guarantees regular weeding and maintenance, which has an excellent outcome for the environment and community members. Removing weeds allows natives to thrive, increasing native animal populations. Community members have a chance to meet like-minded people, enjoy nature, exercise and learn about the local flora, fauna and weeding techniques. This also allows for completing management objectives whilst rangers focus on specialist tasks. This role is very hands-on and gives me insight into park ranger tasks and environmental management practices. Volunteering at DHCP has taught me about the physical application of environmental management and how necessary effective time allocation and planning are for large-scale management. Management protects ecosystems and natural processes and includes sustainable planning for local communities and future generations. I gained valuable skills and knowledge from my sessions, including environmental management techniques, ranger tasks, natural system processes and planning, time management, leadership, ethics, commitment, communication and teamwork. I connected with an industry expert and met informed and passionate citizens. Show less
