I went to work for Balkrishna Doshi, who was mentored by Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, to see how he synthesises their modernist ideals with the Indian vernacular. I worked on the tender package for phase 2 of a new-build library and was responsible for coordinating the completion of the plans. I visited phase 1 on site, where I was able to experience how construction sites operate in India, in comparison to those in the UK. At ECA, I worked through Stages 1 - 3 on the masterplan for a new, sustainable city in Libya, called Shahat. It was a unique opportunity to observe how sustainable principles can inform a city’s structure, from its connection to the surrounding landscape down to the design of its individual buildings. Much of what I learnt on this project, has informed my own work and how I approach my work in the office. As a full time member of the team I was able to gain a strong understanding of the team structure and project organisation, and I was given the responsibility of managing the team in the absence of the Project Architect.
