PI: Berenice A. Benayoun, Ph.D Research in the Benayoun lab focuses on the study of how aging influences genomic regulation and how modulation of the epigenome and transcriptome can influence the aging process. Using a combination of ‘omics’ approaches, machine-learning, and experimental validation in vertebrate aging models (e.g. mouse, African turquoise killifish, etc.), we work to discover novel target genes and pathways that play a fundamental role in healthy and pathological aging. I work on the SIRT6 project, aiming to understand how the protein SIRT6 affects neutrophil regulation, in terms of differentiation and NETosis rate. Through this project, I utilize cell culture, flow cytometry, transfection, and PCR methods to achieve this eventual goal. Show less

      • Jun 2023 - Jul 2023

Shadowed a fellowship-trained cornea specialist who was the former Chairman of the American Academy of Ophthalmology panel on Refractive Surgery Knowledge Base. With this opportunity, I was able to witness the miracle of Lasik in practice for corrective vision treatments for problems that included debilitating vision symptoms (seeing starbursts, glare, ghosting, or halos) and severe dry eye that can severely impact one's daily living. I observed surgeries, such as PRKs and Intacs Implants, and consultations regarding candidacy for LASIK treatment. I learned just how precious vision is and how ophthalmologists are able to provide immediate results and clarity through treatments like LASIK. Show less

There is no such thing as a typical day in emergency medicine, I observed and assisted the doctor in a variety of procedures from routine primary care stuff like UTI’s, Strep, broken toes, ear infections, sinus infections to acute abdomen and head trauma. From my experience, I see urgent care as a necessary safety net for a lot of individuals who don’t have regular access to a PCP and can’t afford to go to the ER. PI: Irving Biederman, Ph. D The core mission of the IUL is to understand how we get mind from brain. One of the main focuses in the lab is the cognitive neuroscience behind face individuation. In this field, I lead a project investigating a combination of subjective measures of prosopagnosia and behavioral tests used to quantify and expand our understanding of the deficits in facial perception. My project involved various research skills, including programming in R, Matlab, and Python, Microsoft Excel, statistical analysis using IBM SPSS, literature reviews, research proposal writing, and task design. For these skills, I was granted the Summer Undergraduate Research Fund in 2022. I also have a research HIPAA certification. Show less
