  Working in a synthetic organic laboratory, I was tasked with improving a problematic early step in a 9 step synthesis. I improved the low yield in this step, removed use of an environmentally harmful reagent, and progressed towards removing impurity issues affecting the final crystallisation. Skills gained from this include use of HPLC (qualitative for in-process monitoring and quantitative for yields etc), LC-MS, NMR, screening techniques for reactions, familiarity with industrial priorities in synthesis, researching and implementing syntheses from literature. I also kept an industry standard lab notebook, and was introduced to GLP requirements.
