Jerome is an outstanding and collegiate computational scientist versed in image processing and data analysis. I am a biologist and have worked together with computer scientist Prof Andrew Bangham for many years on imaging and modelling plant growth. Jerome joined our group as a PhD student and then post doc, developing imaging tools to assist with automated segmentation and extraction of metrics from 3D microscopy images. He developed an imaging platform, VolViewer, that has proved invaluable to us and has also been used as software for a commercially distributed 3D imaging system known as Optical Projection Tomography. This work led to an excellent publication in the top plant journal, Plant Cell, and has been widely cited. He also introduced the OMERO imaging platform to our lab and organised a workshop, called OMERO in Action, which involved one day of talks followed by some practical sessions designed by Jerome. The workshop was a resounding success and is a testament to Jerome’s computational, organisational and communication skills.

Jerome worked for me in a team to implement an OMERO-based biological image management system at the John Innes Centre. The project was funded by JISC and comprised workflow analysis by Jerome of both lab- (including between firewalled collaborative organisations) and technology platform-based operations. His analysis and then provision of servers (working with our Computing Team) and tools has led to hugely positive developments. Workflow efficiences and data handling and tracking have improved, new servers have been implemented and new groups across the Norwich Research Park are implementing OMERO. The latter was in part a consequence of the OMERO workshop that Jerome organised and led at the JIC in which 24 particpants were fully immersed into OMERO. The training notes are available as a web resource under the DMBI project from JISC. Jerome is an outstanding innovator with an excellent grasp of the interface between the lab and the IT world.

I was part of the product leadership team and managed all activities surrounding clinical science for product evidence. This involved creating and running clinical assessments for regulatory, creating and managing research relationships with customers and making sure we published and promoted our products with scientific rigor. My work involved working directly with machine learning scientists, software developers, product managers and regulatory. Data Management for Bio-Imaging. The customization and rollout of a data management, processing and visualisation institute wide service for the bio-imaging department at the John Innes Centre (www.jic.ac.uk). This involved deploying the Open Microscopy Environment (www.openmicroscopy.org), writing image-processing pipelines for server/cluster execution, deploying Mediawiki for the whole institute and making VolViewer (www.volviewer.org), a volume rendering framework, compatible for client-side and server-side GPU volume rendering. An international meeting was also chaired and organized (http://dmbi.nbi.bbsrc.ac.uk/index.php/OMERO) to bring together the community and train users in the use of the Open Microscopy Environment (www.openmicroscopy.org).
