Surgeons performing traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgical techniques experience significant limitations in what they can do within the body. The da Vinci System is designed to overcome these limitations. A sophisticated robotic platform, the da Vinci System is designed to allow the surgeon greater flexibility and reach in surgical practice, offering a minimally invasive alternative for major surgery. Small incisions allow the surgeon to introduce tiny instruments and a high-definition 3D camera connected to the da Vinci console. Using this camera, the surgeon sees a magnified, high-resolution, three-dimensional image of the site being treated. Seated at the console watching the 3D image of the surgical site rather than standing beside the patient, advanced computer programs and state-of-the-art robotic instruments allow the surgeon’s hand movements to be translated into precise micro-movements of the da Vinci instruments.
