    • Night Skies Ranger
      • Aug 2021 - Oct 2021

As a night skies ranger I worked in the Interpretation department at Great Basin National Park. I developed and implemented educational programs and delivered them to groups of 20-200 people. My primary role was to run astronomy programs 3 times a week. These programs consisted of a 30-45 minute interpretive program delivered by myself or another ranger, followed by 1-2 hrs of telescope viewing time. We utilized three 11” Reflector telescopes to view celestial objects such as stars, planets, nebula, clusters, galaxies, etc. When presenting the program, it was my responsibility to operate and maintain the telescopes, and to provide visitors with astronomical information about the objects we view. The park also had an IR Solar Telescope that I set up and used to deliver 30 minute “porch talks” about the sun and stars. In addition to the astronomy programs, I was responsible for leading cave tours into Lehman Caves. This consisted of hour long tours for up to 20 people at a time, providing information about topics such as the geology, history, or preservation of the cave. Great Basin National Park is a certified International Dark Sky Park and has to submit a report to the International Dark Sky Association annually to maintain this status. It was my responsibility to monitor light levels throughout the park and to make suggestions or changes to our lighting infrastructure in order to meet dark sky standards, as well as write up my findings in the annual report. When not working in interpretive programs, I spent my time roving the park, checking in with guests and making suggestions so that they could fully enjoy the beauty that Great Basin National Park has to offer.

      • Jan 2017 - Jul 2021

As Education Assistant, my main role is to aid in the brainstorming and development of new planetarium events and programs. I collaborate with many different department heads at the planetarium, ensuring that all program needs are met and delivered in a timely manner. I also work on a team to increase Fiske's online presence by developing planetarium programs that can be adapted to a virtual setting. This work includes working with local school districts and teachers to build curriculum based planetarium and virtual programming. As an outreach presenter, my main responsibilities involve traveling to schools to present star talks and other space topics in an inflatable minidome planetarium. I also lead labs for k-12 groups who visit Fiske. These labs cover a range of topics such as rocketry, lights and lasers, or solar system "tours". I am also currently training to become a presenter for the full-dome films in our main dome. In addition to presenting shows, I also control and write scripts for the DigitalSky2 planetarium software, "navigating" shows. When not presenting or navigating, I work as an usher assisting and interacting with planetarium guests. I also sell tickets and handle cash in the front office.

As a member of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) team, I performed research focused on the heavy ion plume found at Mars. Using MHD models alongside MAVEN spacecraft data, I analyzed the physics of the Sun-Mars system that drive and shape the ion plume. My research required me to script in python daily, interpret data and draw conclusions, and present and share my research regularly. As a learning assistant for an accelerated intro astronomy course, my duties included running two small recitation lab courses of roughly 20 students, in which key ideas of the course were explained and demonstrated in a more hands on environment. This work involved creating presentations and lessons to supplement the lab work. This lab work included set up, operation, and break down of telescopes and other technical astronomy equipment. I also attended several main lectures during the week and helped students work through problems and activities. I also served as a resource for students by holding weekly office hours and review sessions.
