UCM is the University of Canterbury's Formula SAE racing car team. Formula SAE (aka. Formula Student) is a global racing series where cars built by university engineering students compete in eight different categories. These categories are: cost, business case, design, acceleration, skid-pan, autocross, endurance and efficiency. In 2017, UCM set out to build on the success of the 2016 UCM race car; a four-wheel drive electric car which was the first of its kind to visit the FSAE-A competition held in December 2016 in Melbourne. A team restructure in the middle of the year led to my appointment as Technical Director. As Technical Director & Project Manager I had a team of six lead engineers who each managed one of the vehicle's major sub-systems (powertrain, chassis, aerodynamics, suspension, electrics and ergonomics) and in total was responsible for a team of over 40 engineers. My role encompassed overall project management of UCM's 2017 race car project.

In 2016, UCM successfully designed and built New Zealand's first four-wheel drive electric race car. The car became the first electric vehicle in Formula SAE Australasia history to win an event; winning the skid-pan. UCM also scored third in Engineering Design and second in Business Presentation. The car featured a peak power of 140kW, peak torque of 924Nm, dynamic torque vectoring and traction control through four-wheel independent control and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of less than 3 seconds. In 2016, my role in the team was to implement the accumulator (battery pack) design developed by a Master's student. This involved the spot welding of over 800 individual Samsung INR18650 lithium-ion cells in custom designed cell holders to give a nominal pack voltage of 453VDC. It also involved the assembly of a distributed battery management system and the testing of all these systems. The battery pack design was iterated three times over this one year period. I was also involved in the debugging and development of the electrical systems on the car. In 2017, I assumed the role of Lead Electrical Engineer and was tasked with the design and development of the overall electrical architecture for a four-wheel drive electric racecar. This also involved the following: - Development of a high voltage (500V) lithium ion battery pack and associated circuitry to meet FSAE and international standards. - Improvement of 2016 electrical systems such as safety circuitry and battery pack management. - Mentoring and management of a Final Year Project team consisting of 4 final year electrical engineers.
