I had the pleasure of working alongside with Jeremy at the IBS Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials. He was in charge of a broad range of instrumentation, with a focus on thermal analysis and the study of composites. In this capacity he was the go-to person for many laboratory members, whom he assisted skillfully. In challenging circumstances Jeremy managed to get the equipment up and running, thus contributing significantly to the start-up of the new laboratory at the CMCM. Relying on his extensive knowledge of polymer nanocomposites, he developed a research plan for the development and characterization of new flame-retardant nanocomposites based on black phosphorus, and was able to obtain interesting results with these promising materials. Jeremy is a fun person to work with. He is always in for a good laugh and enjoys collaborating and interacting with colleagues of different backgrounds and personalities. He played an important role as liaison between different research groups in the CMCM, exemplified by the fact that he co-organized the weekly, center-wide meetings and seminars. Overall I would recommend consideration of this proud Wisconsinite.

• Processed and optimized multilayered nanocomposite films composed of clay nanocomposite layers with alternating layers of a miscible polymer for high gas barrier applications. Achieved gas barrier properties otherwise unattainable at the bulk concentrations of nanofillers employed. ◦ Optimized twin screw extrusion processing parameters for maximal dispersion of nanoclay in polyolefins, quantified by XRD, TEM, and gas transport testing. ◦ Matched experimentally determined viscosities of nanocomposite polyolefin batches with externally sourced polyolefins to facilitate uniform layer processing during multilayer co-extrusion. ◦ Exploited mismatched melt interdiffusion of the polymer layers in multilayered films to concentrate nanoclays and increase gas barrier properties. • Investigation of structure-property relationships. Gas barrier and morphology. ◦ Investigated final film morphology and properties by OM, TEM, DSC, TGA, XRD. ◦ Sectioned films using cryogenic techniques. Glass (OM) and diamond (TEM) knives. ◦ Performed detailed image analysis of TEM micrographs to determine clay concentration and particle dimensions relative to annealing time. Demonstrated interdiffusion dependent enlargement of the clay particle aspect ratios due to impingement mediated growth of clay aggregates. ◦ Correlated the individual multilayer thicknesses to the observed increases in multilayered film gas barrier using mathematical models.Formulated and analyzed a variety of water soluble nanocomposites with an emphasis on thermal and morphological correlations.
