At Sambatek, I am in the transportation department in the company. Currently I am the Lead Roadway Designer for TH 61 Withers Harbor Bridge project. We are just starting on final design. I am also working on TH 12/CSAH 92 Realignment as the Utility Coordinator. I recently finished up a project along TH 4 in Meire Grove where I was the Lead Roadway Designer. We reconstructed the roadway through town and created a corridor model to help with designing a proposed profile and tying into all the structures and ground along the corridor. There was also some ADA work, superelevation design, and drainage work for the project. In 2016, I worked full-time on the Blue Line Extension Light Rail project at a MetroTransit office for around a year and a half. I helped develop the plan and profile sheets for the retaining walls built along the rail corridor. I worked on a mill & overlay project along 35W. I designed most of the curb & gutter and guardrail replacement along the main roadway and ramps, calculated the quantities, and filled out the tabs for those pay items. Also, I did the utility tabs for the whole project. In 2018, I worked on a project with Metro Transit where we were improving various Park & Ride sites throughout the metro. I visited each site to help determine what work would be needed, designed over 20 ADA ramps, calculated quantities, and put together a cost estimate for the project. I worked on a project along TH 91 in Nobles County where I designed the ADA for the intersections at 5th & 6th St W. I found the quantities for the ADA ramps, driveways, and sidewalk between 4th St W and 7th St W. I also did the Gopher State One Calls and other utility work along the project corridor. I worked on projects along TH 5 and TH 43 helping with utilities, drainage, and roadway design. I assisted with Gopher State One Calls, culvert design, profiles, tabulations, plan sheets, and quality checks. Show less

I worked for the Department of Transportation Support Center (DOTSC). This is a program through North Dakota's DOT and NDSU's Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute where students from NDSU get to work with two Transportation Engineers from NDDOT at an office on campus and help design real DOT projects. At DOTSC I learned a great deal about transportation engineering and how the design process of various projects is done. I worked on most stages of projects from the beginning where field reviews are done, to putting together preliminary plans, to making the final plan set. I worked on many parts of the designing process like scope of work, basis of estimate, quantities, detail sheets, typical sections, removals, allowable pipe lists, plan & profile, wetland impacts, erosion control, seeding, work zone traffic control, and cross sections. We used MicroStation and Geopak for our design work at DOTSC, so I became very familiar with using both programs for roadway projects. I also used roadway designer a bit to run cross sections for projects. Summer of 2013, I worked full time at DOTSC and we were able to take some "field trips." We attended a few field reviews for upcoming projects and a few PS&E meetings in the districts that the plans were for. We also visited NDDOT's Central Office in Bismarck and talked with a lot of the different divisions of the company to find out more about what they do. I really enjoyed my time at DOTSC throughout my college career. The design part of transportation is really interesting to me, and I hope to learn all I can about it in the future. Show less

I worked at the Box Office on campus because I love the arts. I was in dance for 15 years and played the violin in an orchestra for 7 years. Being surrounded by that kind of atmosphere again was why I loved my job at the Box Office. After my first year, I got promoted to Student Manager, which means that I could run events without my boss there and was in charge of the other students. I made sure all events ran smoothly and helped out any customers that needed assistance. I sold tickets, handled money, and answered any questions that came up. My leadership and communication skills greatly improved with this job. There are many different types of people and they all need assistance in different ways, and it is important to listen to people. Show less

I wanted a summer of experience out in the field actually seeing the construction of projects because I only had design experience. MnDOT offered me a position in their Construction Department doing inspection work out in the field. I did many different duties while working and learned a lot about how projects are actually built. In the field, I watched construction personal on the job and kept track of their time and equipment used while making sure they were following plans correctly. If any workers had questions on what to do I would look to my plans or call/find someone who did know the answer. I would go out and measure quantities to make sure everything was to plan and didn't break any specs or codes. The measurements were also used to make sure the contractor was paid accurately. A few times I helped out with concrete testing and gradations. I had my own truck and drove around project sites and went where I was needed that day. When I started I was on a project on 694 where we were doing CPR work, asphalt repaving, redoing catch basins, updating ped ramps, pouring curb and gutter, video recording storm water pipes, and many other things. After that project was finished I was on a bridge project on Brooklyn Blvd. over Highway 100. They were repouring the deck of the bridge. Show less

At this job, I worked in the office and helped out anyone who needed a hand. I took directions well from everyone. Some tasks I did was using excel spreadsheets to enter many different types of financial data, I filed a lot of paperwork of orders from companies, and I assisted with contacting companies for a credit report they were trying to put together. A lot of the companies' information was outdated or we didn't have it at all, so I faxed out sheets for the companies to fill out and send back. My organization skills were a great help during this job. Show less
