I run day time courses for adults in Horticulture, Organics, and Native Revegetation to NZQA National Certificate Level 3 and 4. I am responsible for tutoring practical and theoretical course material, preparing students for assessment work, supporting them where needed, marking their assignments, and assisting them in completing their course. I have also written course material notes, assessment and marking schedules for unit standards, for AGNZ. These courses are run remotely from head office in Feilding, and so I have the additional roles of marketing, enrolling students, organising the programme, hiring venues, liasing with local nurseries such as Nelmac for practicals and organising field trips to properties in the Horticulture Industry. My course in Native Revegetation covered a brief natural history course for New Zealand, and the historical context of deforestation and our need to recreate, and preserve existing native forest systems. The course covered many practical aspects, and students made native seed collections from which they learnt to treat, process, sow and propagate native trees for their own revegetation projects at home. The trees were propagated partially at Nelmac, and we worked at the nursery throughout the year. We also carried out a riparian planting on private land, working with Lynn Hall of Nelson City Council to find suitable sites. As part of the course the students had to design and implement the riparian planting plan, prepare the site, and maintain plantings afterwards. Show less
