Jennifer Lange

I have worked with Jenny as a colleague for over 5 years. In all those times, I have known her to be a generous, open and committed leader. Her generous spirit motivates her to help others: she is a constant advocate for clients and those in need in her area. She respects and works to understand the challenges facing many families in need, and goes out of her way to find solutions to their problems. She has sought grants, provided education and offered support for people suffering through life’s many trials, and assured their ultimate successes. As a leader, she has earned the respect of her colleagues by thinking outside the box and being willing to collaborate with others. As a leader in the CASH Coalition, she frequently voiced new ideas and addressed concerns in a respectful way, assuring that we were all able to accept solutions and move forward together. Jenny has consistently been a strong leader who allows others to shine. She supports her staff as they carry out the work of her Center, and often calls out their work to others. It has been a pleasure to work with Jenny and learn from her.

I had the pleasure of working on strategic planning with Jenny for the North East Community Center. I found Jenny to be extremely committed to the work that NECC does, to serving the community, and to her leadership of the organization. Jenny actively interviewed dozens of community leaders as part of the planning process and was able to adapt programs to meet community needs and forge new partnerships for NECC. Together we created a comprehensive gap analysis to better understand the opportunities and needs in the community. Jenny was adept at budgeting and forecasting. She is a self-reflective, a quality that is critical in leadership. And she's a really interesting and engaged person beyond her role at NECC with a strong interest in the arts. I continue to keep in touch.

In the early days of the Internet, I helped create overall structure of a leading resource for parents of babies and preschoolers, and designed the back-end of their searchable database of parenting content. I also wrote a newsletter for parents of young children. Under the visionary leadership of the founders, I spent nearly ten years at this organization working with homeless children and teenagers living in welfare hotels and foster homes around New York City, particularly East Harlem. My particular contribution over the years was budgeting, grantwriting and implementing an annual fund program that helped the organization grow from a startup to a budget of nearly a half-million dollars. I also created and led an after-school tutoring program for middle-schoolers; participated with workshops in the visual and performing arts led by extraordinary artists who contributed their creativity and vision for the benefit of the children.

My first professional position, where I learned from some of the most inspiring nonprofit leaders I've ever met, both in development, where I started, training chapters nationwide to run the annual Birdathon fundraiser, and the science department, where I helped research and write a critically important research report about the impacts of Hydroelectric development in James Bay, Quebec. Led daily operations of the nationwide acid rain monitoring network.
