Volunteer internship at KCMC Emergency department. This was arranged as part of my Masters Degree in Critical Care in the Remote and Austere Environment. My goals are to learn and experience medicine delivered in Moshi as well as the challenges staff and patients face. This has led me to not only come to KCMC for a quick exposure but to prolong my stay and learn as much as I can, as well as integrate and be apart of the team. It has been a great experience of exchanging knowledge. My daily routine usually consists of 12hr day/ night shifts. On a typical day we see a variety of chronic illnesses, paediatrics, Critical Care as well as minor and major traumas. We must also consider other illnesses on a daily basis such as malaria, Tetanus, HIV, anaemia, meningitis, hydrocephalus, as well as tropical diseases and even herbal medicine that some villages use. Patient assessment and history is extremely important as there are limited resources. Most of the patients speak Swahili and the staff speak Swahili and English so navigating communication and learning the local language is also helpful. Additional to the ER, I spent some time in theatre as well as participated in suturing using different techniques. Show less
