When working as a lifeguard I am responsible for ensuring the safety of customers through assessing the risks and monitoring a dynamic environment. Remaining focussed whilst providing a quality service for a wide variety of people is the primary challenge faced during a shift. I work with customers to understand their needs and expectations. Through working as a team, it is important to keep colleagues informed of the plans and progress achieved when performing jobs around the centre. This has taught my how to identify and solve arising problems and implementing strategies to overcome these issues. Clear and adaptable communication skills are needed to perform these task well and I feel like I have been able to hone these in my role. Different events and a constantly changing team of co-workers result in increased stress levels, and an environment not conducive to user centred practise. A key example of this is during an emergency. I remain informed and well-practiced, through regular attendance of staff training, to be able to stay calm and focused should an emergency arise. I take an active leadership role in these situations. However, the quality of service expected from a lifeguard by the customers and employers is the minimum requirement for the job. Whenever an opportunity presents itself, I try and increase the standard/quality of the service provided through my job role as a pool lifeguard. This is achieved through providing additional help to both customers and/or staff members or through engaging wider thinking. Show less

    • NUBC Safety Officer
      • Sep 2020 - Sep 2021

The Safety Officer is NUBC’s link to the world of risk assessments, health and safety and insurance. One of my many responsibilities came at the beginning of the year when updating the Safety Policy to bring it in line with new practices alongside ensuring the continued maintenance of club equipment. In addition to this, COVID-19 resulted in the unexpected need to create new risk assessments in line with changing government guidelines, to ensure NUBC members could train safely throughout dangerous and uncertain times. While having to adapt to the constantly evolving situation that COVID-19 brought I learnt how to be flexible in my approach to projects, especially with regards to ensuring the safety of athletes, and enabled me to build resilience that I have carried forwards into other aspects of my life. Furthermore, as a result of my work on NUBC's committee, I was given a position of great responsibility when hand selected to fulfil the role of Safety Officer for British Rowing's test event to return to racing. In this role I had to co-ordinate various teams to enable a safe and well organised competition. No such competition had ever been organised with such tight restriction, therefore it challenged my ability to problem solve and find solutions to issues that had never occurred before. Show less
