Emily Augustini
Jennifer was my research mentor for almost four years in the Jacot Pediatric Cardiac Bioengineering lab. When I began working in the lab I had no research experience. Training an undergraduate can be a delicate process, as the mentor has to correct the student’s (inevitably many) mistakes while still being supportive and patient. Jennifer strikes an ideal balance between constructive criticism and encouragement; she impressed upon me the importance of excellent work, but I was always comfortable coming to her with my questions and blunders. Even when I began an independent project she consistently checked in with me and was always available to help. Under Jennifer’s mentorship I learned how to perform thorough, precise lab work, and based on her leadership skills I would highly recommend her for any position.

- Prepared and submitted necessary protocols for regulatory approval (IRB, IACUC, IBC). - Directed submission of grant applications with physicians and researchers at multiple hospitals and universities, including writing and editing, budget preparation, maintaining collaborator relationships, and interacting with funding agencies. Over 35 applications submitted; funded grants include NIH R01 and U19 and NSF grants. - Maintained function of the lab including space organization and supply and equipment ordering and maintenance. - Standardized procedure documentation to assess changes and improve repeatability between researchers. - Managed lab budgets, including labor distribution and resource procurement. Annual total budget of $350,000+. - Coached graduate students through fellowship applications; 15 applications submitted with 40% success rate. - Authored 10 and edited 30+ peer-review articles published to date. - Invited to present guest lecture 3 times on organization and time management. - Created onboarding procedures for new lab members to ensure access to necessary resources and trainings. - Mentored graduate students, developing goals, project timelines, and setting expectations for their doctoral career. Currently there are 5 graduate students in the lab; worked with 15 students total. - Prepared cassette devices for biological sciences collaborators with no bioreactor experience to easily apply flow to intestinal organoid cell cultures.
