I've had the privilege of knowing, collaborating and working with Jennifer since 2004. We first began collaborative work in our graduate school program. Then, as a fellow teacher in the Kent School District we often shared curriculum and met to discuss ideas. Additionally, Jennifer and I have labored together in education advocacy roles through our union and other local community groups . She is insightful, thoughtful, and diligent. Her creativity and unique point of view are two of the reasons I enjoy collaborating with her.

Sandra Coyer

Jenn is one of the most passionate young educators I have ever met. She is a whiz in the classroom and the management of others.

In my position at AISB, I taught DP Literature, DP Language & Literature, and MYP English 9. I worked closely with vertical and horizontal teams for new curricular choices per new IBO courses and designed and implemented curriculum with a focus on high-engagement thematic units. As the English department Learning Leader, I managed textbook and curriculum audits, prepared and ran department meetings, and observed, coached, and co-planned lessons with department members. During my time at AISB, I led a pro-tip clinic both in-building and at the 2021 CEESA conference focused on writing instruction, and collaborative engagement online. Show less

At Parkrose High School, I led freshman and senior English teams in developing rigorous and engaging curriculum, as well as taught and mentored an AVID cohort throughout their high school career to meet their college goals. I have hosted guest writers in the classroom, coordinated with Educational Assistants on supporting higher-needs students, and worked closely with colleagues to align curriculum both horizontally and vertically. During this time, I also coordinated with library staff and outside educational nonprofits to bring groups like Literary Arts Writers in the Schools (WITS) and The Red Door Project into to the classroom. Additionally, I piloted and developed a new upperclassmen English survey class, "Race, Gender, and Identity in Film and Lit." I attended a summer Oregon Writing Project (OWP) institute, in which classroom teachers practice their craft as writers and apply those approaches and techniques to their instruction. With colleagues from several other school districts, we developed full curriculum units available on OWP's website to all teachers. That connection blossomed into co-developing an OWP grant to allow for curriculum development and peer mentorship through peer observation and feedback for the entire English and History departments. At Lincoln High School I taught English 11, Humor and Culture (12th Grade), and co-advised Yearbook on a one-year temporary contract. As I was an "add-on" hire, I worked closely with current teachers of classes of whom I was relieving class sizes in order to have a smooth transition and continuity in the students' learning experience. While at Lincoln High School, I also hosted a Literary Arts writer in residence through the Writers in the Schools (WITS) program. I also developed and facilitated professional development training opportunities for faculty on high engagement teaching strategies, and served on the High School Outreach Committee for recruitment and retention. A major part of my role as Learning Specialist was collaborating with AVID faculty and Learning Commons staff to develop relevant curriculum tailored to the AVID students' interests and needs. My teaching assignment at IC included IB English, English as a Second Language, and 11th grade Language Arts. I created and executed curriculum that meets internal and external learning targets through critical inquiry and best practices methodology. In addition, I contributed to the curriculum development committee and helped select English texts at the secondary school level. I led a weekly IB advisory class, acting as a liaison between teachers, students, parents, and administration on academic issues of concern. I was also enrolled in Conversational and Written Arabic for the duration of my employment. Show less

While teaching at Kentwood High School, my teaching assignment included Journalism adviser, AP Language and Composition, English 12, English 10, Reading and Writing Essentials, and AVID Elective class teacher and adviser. I created and executed curriculum that met state and national learning targets through critical inquiry and best practices methodology. In addition to classroom duties I volunteered on Textbook Adoption Committee, End of Course Assessment Committee, led staff in-service seminars on critical inquiry and applicable methods, as well as study skill tutorials for pre-freshman "jump-start" institutes (2009 and 2010). During this time, I also taught courses in newspaper writing and page design at the Washington Journalism Education Association (WJEA) Summer Conference from 2007 to 2010, co-chaired contests for the WJEA State Conference in 2008, and judged contests from 2007 to 2011. I expanded a curriculum unit I developed for my Journalism class into a seminar on media literacy which I presented at the Northwest Teachers for Social Justice Conference in 2009, and subsequently volunteered in following years. While at Kentwood, I also completed National Board Certification in English Language Arts for Adolescent/Young Adults (NBCT ELA/AYA 2011). Show less
