A one-month excavation was undertaken at the site of an Early Medieval royal trivallate ringfort at Lisnacaheragh, Garranes, Co. Cork. This was followed by post-excavation work. The site was first excavated by the notable Professor S. P. Ó Ríordáin of UCC in 1937 and later on by Mary O'Donnell from 1991-2. Both excavations uncovered a large volume of artefacts connected to metalworking. In the 1991-2 excavations, O'Donnell partially uncovered the remains of a possible roundhouse, in which the 2017 excavation aimed to confirm this by exposing the second half of the suspected dwelling by reopening O'Donnell's trench and an additional 12m by 8m trench beside it.

A one-week excavation was undertaken on a levelled satellite Early Medieval ringfort adjacent to the main royal trivallate ringfort of Lisnacaheragh at Garranes, Co. Cork. The purpose of this excavation was primarily to obtain dating evidence in order establish if the fort was contemporary to the main royal fort nearby in order to I nform an ongoing landscape study of the area. This was done by placing a 12m by 2m trench through the bank and ditch and obtaining charcoal from the base of the ditch fill in its primary context.
