Per Scholas is a company that provides rigorous (free) tech education to learners traditionally under-represented in such fields. In my role as part of the Instructor Development and Quality Assurance Team, I wear many hats: - Develop the instructional onboarding curriculum, which I use to train new instructors in best practices for adult learning techniques. My curriculum consists of asynchronous eLearning modules, as well as remote synchronous training, which I run myself. - Develop train-the-trainer professional development content for current instructors who need additional andragogical support. I provide strategies for increasing engagement, interactivity, classroom management, instructor presence, and more. - Planned, designed, organized, and taught the Instructor Academy for recent Per Scholas graduates who were interested in learning how to become instructors. Through this program, I worked with 15 teaching fellows and taught them research-based educational best practices in lesson planning, DEIB/emotional intelligence, learner engagement, and adult learning fundamentals. - Consistently observe current instructors and provide actionable feedback on their strengths and weaknesses in the classroom. When necessary, I provide one-on-one coaching with instructional techniques designed to increase their success and help them achieve their KPIs. - Formally observe instructors as part of the official remediation or promotion process. - Design and run organization-wide interactive mini-lessons to share actionable techniques for managing cognitive load, developing deeper learner understanding/retention, building stronger classroom community environments, increasing engagement, etcetera. Super 7 Girls is a non-profit organization that supports inner-city girls in Chicago. In my role as manager, I am responsible for interviewing, onboarding, and training new curriculum writers for health and nutrition sciences. Once they are fully trained, I transition into project management where I directly oversee their work in content design and conduct weekly or biweekly meetings to provide feedback, ensure deadlines are met, and offer instructional support/professional development where needed. I helped lead a 23-member department comprising teachers from multiple science disciplines. I worked to support all science teachers by facilitating communication with administrators. To strengthen camaraderie within the department, I helped organize social events. In addition to helping teachers understand and adhere to PWCS teaching, grading, and assessment regulations, I also communicated with vendor companies to set up staff training sessions for new equipment/technology. To keep track of our supplies, I maintained a detailed inventory of science lab equipment, chemicals, textbooks, etcetera. When we had a position to fill, I worked with the science administrator to interview applicants and make hiring recommendations to build a strong, cohesive team. When we brought on a new educator, I observed them in the classroom and offered constructive feedback for best practices. Show less

    • Instructional Coach
      • Jan 2018 - 2021

      • 2017 - 2021

I joined Battlefield High School in 2017 where I taught Chemistry 1 and Pre-AP Chemistry to approximately 140-170 students each year and guided 100% of them to pass the Virginia Standards of Learning End of Course exam. As the predominant Pre-AP teacher at the school, I increased the rigor of the program, which led to a 25% increase in participation in the AP Chemistry course after only one year. Additionally, as the gifted chemistry teacher, I developed advanced inquiry laboratory activities and organized Q&A sessions with chemists from around the country to provide students with opportunities to go beyond the standard curriculum. After Prince William County Schools was forced to abruptly transition to a virtual environment in the spring of 2020, I was asked by the district science supervisor to participate in a team that developed online resources for all county chemistry teachers to use during their virtual instruction for the 2020-21 school year. I created lessons, curated videos, wrote notes, and designed practice activities for several units of study. These modules were accessible for users of all abilities and were shared through the Canvas LMS. Show less

      • 2013 - 2017

I joined Fairfax High School as a new teacher in 2013 and immediately identified myself as a successful educator. I was consistently evaluated as being highly effective on my yearly progress reports by my supervisors. By the end of my second year, I had increased the pass rate on the state end-of-course exam to 100% among my students. During my third year, I was the only teacher in the county selected as the winner of the Exemplary Early Career Teacher Award for my outstanding performance in the classroom. I was recognized by students, parents, teachers, and administrators for my ability to build strong personal connections with students and encourage them to believe they could succeed. In addition to being a strong educator in my own classroom, I was also a passionate team member, working closely with the other 6 chemistry teachers to design, develop, and implement new curriculum ideas. Our team worked together so seamlessly that we were chosen as exemplars for other cohorts throughout the building to emulate. Show less
