Virtual Extended Day Program - Instructor, "Inspirational Math"
-
Sep 2020 - Aug 2021
As a part of this virtual after-school program, I've taught 5-20 middle school students weekly over Zoom for two 8-12 week sessions. In these hour-long sessions, I strive to build curiosity and excitement around mathematics by curating tasks that are outside the normal 6th-8th grade math curriculum. With the aid of videos from the YouCubed Program (Stanford University), I dispel common myths about making mistakes, fixed mindsets, and what it takes to be a “math person.” As a part of this virtual after-school program, I've taught 5-20 middle school students weekly over Zoom for two 8-12 week sessions. Aug 2018 - Aug 2021
Our middle school follows a team-teaching model, with 2-3 teachers per class that work collaboratively to teach all subjects. As the lead teacher for 6th grade, my role is a balance of direct instruction to students and supervision/mentorship of my co-teachers. On a daily basis, I plan and deliver inquiry-based mathematics and science instruction to our 22 students. I co-teach reading class to improve English vocabulary and fluency in our ELL students, and help analyze student test data. Throughout the school day, I develop positive classroom community with group games, humor, and team-building activities; I also help monitor lunch, recess, and specials periods. My co-teachers are both new to the profession, so I serve as a resource and guide for their own classroom management and lesson planning. Show less

Special Education Teacher

Aug 2014 - Jun 2018
I worked as a special education teacher at a public K-8 school in a low-resource neighborhood. Every semester had a new combination of duties required or subjects taught. At different points over this four-year period, I co-taught middle school ELA, math, social studies, and science classes of approximately 30 students. I also taught 5th-8th grade ELA and math resource classes of approximately 10 students. Throughout this time, I honed my classroom management skills by building rapport, teaching and adhering to efficient procedures, and developing rules that maximize students' emotional and physical safety. As a part of my special educator role, I developed and implemented lesson plans for students with behavior disorders, specific learning disabilities, and high-functioning autism. I also wrote Individualized Learning Plans for students, tracking progress and completion of IEP goals. I collaborated with general education teachers, school counseling staff, and administrators in order to ensure that the holistic needs of my pupils were met. Show less
