Breuer Preservation Fund
-
Sep 2011 - Jan 2018
Established to preserve and maintain the art and architectural integrity of the Central Library, the only Marcel Breuer-designed building in the Detroit area. Worked with the World Monument Fund and the Knoll Corporation to secure a $50,000 grant, and raised an additional $50,000 in individual contributions and community partnerships. The success of the Fund was instrumental in the restoration of the Library’s four major mid-century works of art valued at over $10M: a tapestry designed by Breuer based Wassily Kandinsky’s “Sur Fon Noir” series of paintings and woven in Aubusson, a towering Lyman Kipp sculpture titled “Salute to Knowledge,” Herbert Matter’s photomural “History of Writing” featuring photo examples of various stages of human communication through writing from around the world that cover several thousand years of history, and a stunning mobile by Alexander Calder. The preservation of the mobile brought local and national attention to the Library. Worked directly with Calder’s grandson at the Calder Foundation in New York City, and was interviewed by several newspapers, Fox 2 Detroit, and ABC’s World News Tonight. Authored a book with forward by legendary designer Ruth Adler Schnee entitled “Central Library, A Mid-Century Modern Gem: Its Art, Architecture and Significance in the Modernist Movement”.
