Intern in the Guarantee and Wholesale Solutions team.Delivered a bespoke workplace solution that managed scheme lender fee (SLF) payments. - Created an Excel dashboard from scratch and frequently communicated with the GWS Operations team, to ensure that the solution would meet their specific requirements. Produced a functioning workflow tool. Produced a Excel spreadsheet collating key information such as, maximum LGTDV, on the ENABLE Guarantee team's clients (delivery partners). - Extracted useful information on other lenders in the market from 'The Lender Index' to serve as a benchmark. Continuously updated the spreadsheet (added more lenders and also an ESG offering column). Collaborated with two senior analysts to produce a closed transactions spreadsheet for the director of the ENABLE Guarantees team. Collated key information on closed transactions such as, effective date, eligibility criteria, and reporting fields, by looking at the deed of guarantee as well as reports. Delivered an audit scope from scratch for an audit of a client. This is a key part of the approvals process for a transaction. My work was approved by the head of the team and no changes were made. Presented on the topic of bank capital, as part of my internship. I was not given any direction, so I did my own detailed research and focussed on topics I found interesting. I went through the definition of bank capital, its history, relevance to the GWS team's role, and the regulatory framework. I encouraged a debate of the current regulatory framework (Basel III), and was asked many challenging and interesting questions by the Managing Director and senior directors. As part of a team workshop, I presented on a boring topic, and utilised engagement techniques to make it as interesting as possible. Performed calculations from scratch using definitions from legal documents. Created amortisation tables in Excel, and used dynamic index match function.

      - I managed my time between projects and ad-hoc tasks as a Structuring intern at a leading Private Equity firm. - I independently learnt to navigate complex internal systems and assisted team members in using these systems. - I confidently presented on a major project to 25 people in a regional meeting and answered questions. - I set up a central information page for this project containing all relevant information and documentation. - I particularly enjoyed tracking and recording the firm’s new investments and divestments, creating structure charts for mandates and funds, including complicated master-feeder and parallel structures, and drafting an issues list for a side letter negotiation.- For the second half of my internship, I mainly worked with Complex products. - I proactively helped a colleague in the Client Solutions team by applying a process I learnt on a previous task. - As the structuring lead on a firm-wide project, I collaborated with several teams and took charge of driving the project to completion before the deadline.- I was recommended for a task outside of my remit, by my supervisor, as I had shown attention to detail in my previous work. - I engaged in meetings with external counsel where difficult side letter negotiations, challenges facing clients and trends in the private equity industry were discussed. - I drafted AIFMD disclosure documents and Short form Subscription documents. - I amended NDAs and Facility agreements that were in various languages.

This took place from the 23rd to the 30th of July. Key skills that I developed: working efficiently as a team, interpersonal skills, communicating with the client and relaying information to my team, quickly understanding a new industry, working under time pressure, concisely summarising, and interpreting the problem. Prior to the first training session I was placed into a team of 3 other TOSCA participants. We had all never met each other and were asked to work on a case study. We had to generate hypotheses concerning a small hotel that wished to increase profits. I took the initiative and started brainstorming. I learnt about the consulting industry in the first training session and how to reap the maximum benefits from TOSCA. I then understood from the second training session, what makes a good proposal letter, written report, and presentation. Upon receiving the brief from the client I sent an email to the client setting up an initial meeting. I then organised a team meeting (we then proceeded to have daily meetings) where we all discussed the brief and generated a list of questions to ask the client. We were very well prepared, in contrast, the other team working on the same client project had not prepared any questions. We worked incredibly well as a team and I played more of a leadership as well as organisational role. I also conducted a survey to collect data for the client and we received 68 responses in just 48 hours. I delegated tasks to my team members and we worked incredibly hard on our respective parts. I gave an engaging presentation on the performance of competitors in the market and I dealt well with a technical difficulty when my laptop broke down halfway through my portion of the presentation. The client was so impressed with our work that he asked for another meeting to discuss our results further. I continue to stay in touch with the client.

I shadowed an employee in the core legal division of Pearson group. I saw first hand what an in-house lawyer does every day. I learnt about the variety of work that is available, including investigations and data protection. I learnt that the legal team at Pearson works with a lot of teams at Pearson and is involved in matters that are not strictly legal, making the job very interesting as well as challenging. I helped out by formatting contrats and letters in words, attempting to write a variation letter, amending contracts and agreements, making enquires, attending meetings, and completing MOUs. I had the opportunity to witness and contribute in a variety of work and it was most enjoyable.

I interned at a small private law firm in Vienna. It is a specialist law firm dealing in trademarks and parents. I learnt a great deal about trademark law and learn how to use the trademark register search fields to gain information about registered trademarks of clients. Additionally, I did some research for a client to try and prove sufficient use of the trademark. I also did some secretarial work regarding business cards and organising contacts. I was part of a team of four students that took part on the final of the first ever Norton Rose Fulbright 'Laws of the game' competition. We produced a video answering the question: "how is a premiership rugby team similar to a global law firm?" and then attended the final at the Norton Rose Fulbright office in More Riverside London. We were presented with a scenario where we had to recommend a firm to become the next kit sponsor for the Nortons Rugby Club. We were only given three hours to prepare a presentation and then presented it to a panel of two associates at the firm. We took away valuable analytical skills and presentation skills as well the ability to work effectively in a high stress and a high pressure environment. We then had a chance to network with associates over drinks and learnt more about the legal industry as a whole.

I undertook work experience at this firm for a week. I was given my own desk and work laptop and was put in the middle of other permanent employees. I was shown around the firm and met employees from different areas and was given an IT introduction. I was then out to work straight away, the first task I was given was a research task where I had to discover more about the clients that Hg Capital deals with and compile this information in a powerpoint slide. I was then given an excel spreadsheet I had to fill out with details about potential clients, their EBITDA and other such numerical information. This involved a lot of number crunching as well as being careful where I found the information as not all information was presented in the same way so I would have to convert them to all be in. the same format. I was then given the task of calling potential clients to find out more about their products and had to create an excel spreadsheet comparing all of the client data. Overall, my Excel, powerpoint and communication skills were greatly improved and I learnt a lot about the financial services industry.

I attended a Morgan Stanley three day insight programme which detailed the roles available in the firm and the type of work carried out. I was put into a team of peers and we were given projects and case studies. One of the case studies involved considering Mergers and Acquisitions and undertaking research to advise our clients which action would be most beneficial. Another case study involved creating a new business and presenting its a pitch, I led this case study and my idea was the one that was pitched to the panel of Morgan Stanley employees. I developed commercial awareness through this insight programme and took away key information about the investment banking sector.
