During these 9 weeks, I explored the effects of temperature on disease transmission in multi-host communities. Using a big mesocosm experiment we were able to observe the effects of fluctuating temperature on disease transmission, specifically. We looked at community structures with the host (Daphnia dentifera), diluter (Ceiodaphnia dubia), and parasite (Metschnikowia bicuspidate). Along with communities with just the host and parasite. These communities were then exposed to fluctuating temperatures and a mean temperature, in order to observe the effect of fluctuating temperatures on disease transmission. We hypothesized that fluctuating temperatures will increase the amount of diluters present, causing a greater dilution effect via co-existence of the host and the diluter. The experiment is still on-going, and I still plan on being involved after the program has ended. Show less
