      Jennifer DePaolo is a studio artist, educator, writer and the Associate Director of Community Outreach at the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque, NM. DePaolo’s work addresses the relational nature of life, identity, equality and community. She moved to Albuquerque in 2004 to begin work as a graduate student and teaching assistant at the University of New Mexico. In 2006, she participated in UNM’s Land Arts of the American West program as a Teaching Assistant. In 2008, DePaolo held her MFA exhibition, Home Economics at the Harwood Art Center where, in 2011 she became full time staff. Today, DePaolo works for a more just, equitable and integrated community through her outreach, studio practice and collaborative events and projects. DePaolo founded Gathered, an annual event that features pop up meals on hand made pottery in collaboration with Edible Magazine and local growers and chefs. She co-coordinates Burque Noir, a visual and performance art showcase and networking event for Black artists in Albuquerque. She leads an ongoing community sculpture project with her clay collective and participates in national juried and invitational exhibitions including: Beyond the Brickyard at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana; Small Favors at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia; Daily Companions at Baltimore Clay Works; Art in Craft Media at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo; and Dispersal/Return, an invitational show at the University of New Mexico Art Museum in conjunction with the 2009 Land/Art statewide exhibition.       Adjunct Faculty January 2009- December 2010 • As an adjunct instructor at the University of New Mexico I taught Art Studio Course 168 Introduction to Ceramics, 268/ 369 Ceramics Materials and Aesthetics, and Topics: Ceramics for the Table for advanced and graduate students. • I helped develop standardized requirements for Introductory ceramics curriculum and rewrote curriculum for the 268/ 369 course as well as the Topics course. • I was responsible for mentoring incoming graduate students on ceramic shop protocol, firing procedures and ceramics curriculum standards. • I taught an overview of comparative international approaches to ceramic art as well as a multi-cultural review of the influences that have shaped 20th century developments in the States. • My students gained a foundational understanding of ceramics starting with primary ceramic materials to mixing their own clay. In the advanced courses my students used a range of clays including low fire sculpture and tile clay bodies, earthenware and terra cotta, and mid and high fire stoneware and porcelain. I cover all primary methods of hand building and wheel throwing construction as well as machine-assisted construction specific to the type of clay in use. • I have developed protocol for safe and efficient kiln use in the advanced levels of ceramics including the requirement of faculty lead training on the soda kiln and faculty supervised firings on the electric, gas, and raku kilns for students learning to fire their own work.
