Peatland Partnership - Farm Liaison Officer
-
Mar 2022 - Present
I will be working with a number of colleagues across multiple organisations, including the RSPB, Natural England, FWAGS and the Avon Wildlife Trust, along with farmers and other landowners to action vital peatland restoration work. Work that is crucial in tackling the climate crisis. My work to restore peatland will improve the resilience of Somerset to the threats from the climate crisis, help protect and restore the most threatened habitat in the UK and associated biodiversity (wetlands), and cut the huge carbon emissions produced by dried and degraded peatlands. By 2025, the partnership will be part of driving a process of transformational change that will shift the Levels and Moors from a landscape dominated by carbon emissions to a landscape managed to deliver net sequestration. Our objectives are:1. 1000 Ha of degraded peatland on a trajectory to recovery by 20252. 262,500 cumulative tonnes of CO2e emission reductions by 2050*3. Somerset Peatland Partnership fully established for Somerset and North Somerset4. 2 applications to the DEFRA Nature for Climate Fund, Restoration Grant, one in 2022 for the first tranche of sites and again in 2023 for other sites.*Calculated from moving 1000 Ha from ‘extensive drained grassland’ (emitting 13 tonnes CO2e/ha/yr) to ‘near natural fen’ (sequestering 1 tonnes CO2e/ha/yr) x 25 years. 14 tonnes CO2e x 1000 x 25 = 350,000 tonnes. To provide some head room and allowing time for habitats to change sufficiently we have estimated 75% of this 350,000 = 262,500 tonnes.

Mixed arable and livestock farm laborer
-
Jun 2014 - Present
This is a part time job I take on during the summer and winter breaks between my university semesters. It is a diverse job, as I am a laborer on a mixed arable and livestock farm. My work predominantly includes tractor work, physical labour and a variety of animal husbandry roles. This job has been great at getting hands on experience with argicultural work, which I value greatly as I am considering a career in agricultural consultancy.

2017 - Present
I have been a keen artist since I left school and alongside my other commitments I have made an effort to sell commisioned artwork in a variety of formats. This has included tattoo designs, taditional canvas oil paintings and promotional artwork for environmental projects. This section of my proffessional life has encouraged focus on my personal branding and customer base communication, but has also had a huge influence on my entrepnurial skills. In addtion working freelance in this way has fostered a great sense of self motivation for projects I'm involved in.

In this role I contributed to the creation of an Environmental Impact Assessment that TEC had been commissioned by a mining project taking place in Guinea (West Africa). In my work I had to create a series of reports from raw data collected on the baseline reliance of local communities on a variety of ecosystem services and assess whether current access and usage was sustainable in the baseline situation.
