Project Researcher
-
Jul 2019 - Oct 2019
Within this role, I had complete oversight of the research project from start to finish. The research was looking into the start-up ecosystem of the Knowledge Quarter (KQ), to gain insight into how best to support the start-up community in the area. The aim being to inform Camden Council in particular for their ‘Affordable Workspace Strategy’ and other key players to make adjustments to policy, buildings and funding to ensure start-ups continue to start and develop within the area. The research was joint funded by UCL Innovation and Enterprise and the KQ and came from one of the recommendations in the Science and Innovation Audit for the KQ, which was published in March this year. As part of the project, I conducted a literature review, interviews with key players in the start-up ecosystem and mapping of workspaces within the area. The interviews for the research were conducted with a range of people. I gained significant experience in successfully getting in contact with various people to engage them in the research – from senior levels of management in development companies, to the founders of start-ups themselves. I supported the Admin team during Rift’s busiest time of year. Responsibilities included: phoning HMRC to resolve issues involving tax returns and self-assessment records; liaising with clients and HMRC to ensure the correct tax code was being used; phoning clients to give updates on their tax returns; general admin tasks: post, scanning, copying etc. I got on incredibly well with the team I worked with and had a lot of fun. Towards the end of my time, I was also moved to the Payments team within the company to gain some experience with that side of the business. Show less

During my Year in Industry at DSTL, I worked on the initial research stages of developing the Defence and Security Accelerator. Other responsibilities included technical report writing and organising division-wide seminars surrounding statistical analysis. I enjoyed the immense amount of development in my presentation, interpersonal and communication skills whilst in the role, as well as seeing the impact of my accurate research and report writing skills on real projects.
