I supervised Jeff as the Homeland Security teacher for the past two years. Jeff did not have any teaching experience when he was hired as our Homeland Security teacher, but he quickly embraced the role, and proved adept at it. Jeff created a course focused on critical thinking and problem solving skills for high school juniors and seniors. He used a wide range of texts to expose students to different ideas and thinking in regards to issues related to protecting the Homeland. He created opportunities for student writing to be published in industry publications, for students to present projects to industry professionals, and for students to demonstrate their learning in a public way. Jeff also demonstrated his compassion and kindness in the way he worked with his students. He communicated well with parents and with school officials, and he went out of his way to make sure students knew that he cared for them and for their success in school and life. In a short amount of time Jeff proved himself to be a wonderful teacher. His quick grasp of the philosophical foundations for teaching, and his willingness to have high standards for students that were also coupled with caring for them made him an excellent teacher.

I have known Jeff for nearly 15 years, three of which I had the opportunity to work with him in a professional manner at the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH). Between 2000 and 2003, I served as the program manager of an AmeriCorps program housed at CDPH. During this time, Jeff supported my development as a leader and manager early in my career through professional coaching. He also played an integral role in negotiating and resolving a conflict that arose in the program. Based on my experience working with Jeff, I can confidently say that he is one of the most authentic and passionate people I know that brings personal leadership to his work. He has strong facilitation and interpersonal skills, and finds creative ways to support individuals in reaching their full potential. I saw and experienced this firsthand, and would strongly recommend Jeff to any organization.
