Manage large-scale, clustered, fault-tolerant 3-tier web application server systems that run on a VMWare-based Virtualization platform. Develop scripts, programs, tools to facilitate management of those systems. Monitor network, database server processes, OS processes, web server processes, and related system components to help provide 5-nines uptime and achieve a high level of performance and responsiveness. Manage multiple code releases for various clients. Work with team members to achieve all of these results. Team members include developers, sysadmins, marketing and sales staff, and customer support staff, all of whom I was required to work with closely. Operating Systems, server applications, and services have included Solaris and Linux server OSes, Apache web server, Bundled app severs (e.g. JIRA and Confluence), JSCAPE SFTP server, Subversion, MySQL, and many others. Additionally, I have had to manage and create patches, plugins, and tools to integrate with Moodle, which is a PHP web application. Thus a high degree of expertise with PHP/LAMP development has been required. Finally, I have had to interface directly with clients to provide fixes, help and expertise/consulting regarding their Moodle system. Moodlerooms' high volume, high performance, high-end environment has honed my sysadmin, LAMP development, and general geek-of-all-trades skills to a razor edge. Show less

Senior Software Developer

Jun 2006 - Feb 2008
In order to create fully on-line degree programs for the JHU Engineering School, I helped develop tools, processes, and Web Applications that were used by the On-line Programs. These tools included administrative applications, teaching objects, and Web based utilities. I had the opportunity to improve my AJAX, PHP, and HTML skills, as well as Linux system administration and web server administration. I was also called upon to provide strategic insight and ideas with respect to implementation of technologies. Specific projects included: develop from scratch a student and course database management tool used by faculty and staff; develop a web based, interactive “learning object” to help demonstrate systems engineering; provide application support for existing web applications; provide application support for commercial (well, “off-the-shelf” if not “commercial”) systems including Confluence, JIRA, WebCT, and Moodle. I was also responsible for a certain amount of System Administration on Linux (Debian) machines including software installation, backups, updates, and general troubleshooting, and a small amount of Mac OS X support.
