To Whom It May Concern: Jeffrey Parrish has been a standout student in the UIC Industrial Design program as well as a standout patron of our workshop. I could see from day one that he was a quick study and possessed a drive and yearning to learn. Something we don't see often enough. I meet most students when they are taking the first year Industrial Design class which focuses heavily on learning shop skills and creating projects from wood, plastic and sheet metal. Jeff had no problem stepping up to each task often finding a unique solution to the assigned projects. In Jeff's pursuit for his degree, he conceived some very ambitious projects that required him to work many extra hours here in the shop to study materials and then the techniques needed to fabricate with them. He has become quite adept on most of the woodworking equipment and is comfortable on much of the sheet metal and precision machinery as well. Jeff was always one of the first to come in for project planning when receiving an assignment and has a keen instinct for managing his time. An added bonus: Jeff asks questions when he is unsure. During his last semester here at UIC, I got to know him better, discovering his sincere interest in community service and that he is an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, an incredible accomplishment. The first to my knowledge here at UIC. I believe Jeff would be a worthy asset to any employer and to the design/fabrication industry as a whole. Sincerely, Steven Backman Project Lab Supervisor College of Art & Architecture backman@uic.edu

As manager of the UIC Library’s Reserve/Media and Microforms Units, I am pleased to recommend a member of our team, Mr. Jeffrey Parrish for your consideration. I first had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Parrish some time ago when he came to our service desk to borrow library materials. We were very busy helping other students, and Mr. Parrish waited patiently and without complaint. When his turn came, he was so gracious and understanding that we offered him a job. I was surprised and immensely pleased to learn that Jeff’s talents extend far beyond his patient nature. Though assisting the public is an important aspect of this position, Mr. Parrish readily brings his industrial design skills to the job. The Reserve Desk provides a variety of services and we often create layouts for building signage, prepare equipment set ups and make recommendations for furniture and space layouts for the office. Because he is such a skilled designer, we were able to do these types of projects in house and eliminate the need for additional consultations. Mr. Parrish is thorough and has great attention to detail - he asks specific questions to determine how the final product should reflect the needs of both staff and library users. One summer he collaborated with our Reference Department for a special project, and at the end of the summer that department offered him a job as well. Mr. Parrish’s helpful nature capacity for learning continue to impress me, and in the four years he has worked for us I have always been proud of his increasing knowledge and ability to apply what he learns. The primary function of this unit is to provide support to faculty and library users, and an important part of delivering quality service is communicating with users and effectively analyzing their needs. He easily adapted to the environment and brings the full range of both his technical ability and his problem solving skills to the position. The ability to think quickly and decisively is an asset in public service units, and Mr. Parrish has always been especially diligent about helping users to find information they need. A gifted communicator, he is able to put others at ease and help them to become more receptive to new ideas. Working in the library has only heightened Jeff’s desire for knowledge and those of us who work with him greatly benefit from his eagerness to share what he learns. As his manager, I have been able to evaluate his performance in a variety of situations and remain impressed with his growing abilities. I highly recommend Mr. Jeffrey Parrish for your consideration.
