I taught two sections of CPN 101 for the Fall 2016 semester.CPN 101 is a first-year writing course where students learn the fundamentals of college writing by composing analysis and argument essays. The also learn the skills of close and critical reading along with paraphrasing, library skills, and source analysis. Since I am a mass media scholar, I always chose a topic of inquiry that is media related. Recently my classes have been exploring popular culture through the lens of entertainment media such as film, gaming, music, and television. This is a blackboard intensive course. Students use this platform to complete an in-class essay, participate in discussion boards, check their grades, upload assignments, and download documents. Likewise, I use blackboard for all of their out-of-class (and some of their in-class) work.

I currently teach two sections of English 101 and one section of COMM 104, which is a service learning course. ENG 101 (re)introduces students to the concepts of comparison, analysis, and composition. They compose a variety of short and medium journals and homework assignments. They spend a good amount of time on paragraph and sentence level writing including grammar and transitions. COMM 104 is a first-year communications service learning course that helps students with concepts such as time and stress management, emotional intelligence, and note-taking. Students learn through class discussion, presentations, and individual assignments. I use blackboard for all courses so that students have access to all documents electronically. They also submit their homework and check their grades through blackboard.

I taught several classes at the Newhouse School both during and after my tenure as a student there (though not every semester). I was the instructor of record for Introduction to Media and Society and well as Race, Gender, and Media. I taught during academic years 2002-2004, 2007, 2010-2012.As an instructor, I was a proponent of using technology in the classroom. I did away with hard copy paper submissions and emailed copies in favor of Google Docs, which allowed me to access students papers online. The main advantage of this was that I could at any stage in the writing process access student papers and assignments in order to provide feedback. I could also grade them online. That access allowed me to look at student work from my computer, tablet or smartphone.I was also a great proponent of using Twitter in the classroom. I did this because it allowed every student an opportunity to participate in class discussions. This was very helpful in large lecture classes. It also allowed student thoughts and feedback to be incorporated into the class discussion. To that end, I would create a back channel that allowed students to analyze and comment on class discussions, readings, and videos. I would take "twitter breaks" so that I could read what students were writing and then use those tweets to enhance the lecture or discussion.

I taught two classes: introduction to academic writing and critical research. We were given a lot of leeway in terms of topics, so I usually focused on some aspect of mass media. The subjects varied, but usually centered around race, religion, and/or popular culture. In addition to the standard duties of syllabus construction, office hours, grading, class prep and such, I also used a lot of social media in and outside of the class room. For example, I sometimes used a Twitter backchannel during class discussions and while showing film. I found that this helped quiet students engage in the topic. Also, I used Google Docs to engage students and their work. This streamlined the process because I could view their work as they created it and offer immediate feedback. It also bypassed the traditional hard copy or email submission. Docs proved to be most useful during class as well because students could work together on writing in real-time and I could respond to their writings and projects, also in real time.
