Eratosthenes' experiment: proves the sphericity of the Earth. In 205 BC, Eratosthenes successfully measured the Earth's circumference, using the length of the shadow cast by a rod in the Summer Solstice period. He performed the measurement at Alexandria and measured the coincidence when the Sun was directly above Syene, performed calculations and arrived at a value around 39,250 km in circumference, a value very close to what is currently accepted: 40,075 km in length.
