OPPORTUNITY With thousands of Motorola professionals, I lost my job after a 30-year tech career at the age of 53. At that same time, a family member was struggling with a complex illness. I faced the reality that I needed to be a full-time caregiver, and there was no option to return to a traditional job for several years. OPPORTUNITY I was found on LinkedIn by the CEO of the White Hawk Group. The owner valued my success as an outplacement coach with two other firms, and my ability to manage a large caseload of clients. The challenge of this role was to work for a Fortune 100 Global Hospitality client when the hotel industry was drastically impacted by the pandemic. ACTIONS I was assigned over 100 candidates from front-desk hospitality professionals to executives managing luxury hotels. A valued role was just to listen to their loss and support the grieving process. Many clients graduated from elite hospitality schools and were passionate to continue working in the hospitality industry. The challenge was to accept the loss and then engage in outplacement services. We worked hard on clarifying transferrable skills, and brainstorming industries of interest. Many were drawn to HR, project management, or customer success roles. Others found new industries of interest including Sr. Living and golf resort management. I rewrote everyone's resume and LinkedIn profile, and build a customized cover letter. I also helped them prepare for an interview using mock interviews. RESULTS Many Clients overcame their fear and successfully pivoted careers into human resources, senior living, and many other industries. Client satisfaction was high. Show less

OPPORTUNITY I joined Motorola after graduating from college, working as an engineering college recruiter. I walked into a Tech company experiencing explosive growth. The cell phone business was in the infancy stage, so a slew of new engineers had to be found. I enjoyed recruiting over 150 software, hardware, and industrial engineers from around the country to work in our cellular businesses and within the public safety communications business. ACTIONS Working for a growing tech company, I had the good fortune to rotate from HR to learning, organizational development, and project management within four Motorola business units: Communications, Cellular Infrastructure, Automotive, and Mobile. Roles varied, including recruiting, project managing global HR and quality initiatives, leading change management campaigns for large-scale business transformations, and building strategic learning plans within engineering and supply chain. RESULTS My most memorable work included supporting a factory to convert into world-class quality operations. This work involved managing a holistic change management plan for 1500 staff, including training in six sigma processes and tools, a communications plan, and incentives for process improvement teams (A trip to Hawaii). Within two years, the factory was recognized as a Center for Excellence, institutionalizing a quality-centric metrics-driven continuous improvement culture. As an OD and learning consultant, I aligned learning solutions to strategic business initiatives, resulting in building the technical and leadership competencies needed to achieve strategic business goals.
