Jack is the founder of the Prague-based business I invested in and joined in '02 (i90/AlbumCity, a cross-language / cross-currency B2C and C2C online marketplace for Central Europe). Jack subsequently founded, and still personally programs and runs, Nelso.com, which is a cross-language travel/maps/business-yellow pages website (eg, see www.nelso.dk for Danish language view of Nelso and www.nelso.co.uk for the british english view). Jack recently launched a killer iPhone Nelso-based travel app, starting with his Prague city guide as the first installment. You can download it for free by searching for "Nelso Prague" in the iTunes app store (NOTE: it's a somewhat large file for an app [approx 120 meg] but that's because houses the entire Nelso Prague dataset locally on the iPhone or iTouch, including over 5000 high res pictures that Jack and his team have personally taken of various Prague establishments). Jack is somewhat of renaissance man - having been an investment banking analyst, owner of a web consulting company that worked with the EU government, self-trained Oracle Java and Web programmer, visionary entrepreneur, and world history savant. But most of all, he's a wicked brilliant business mind and programmer. Specifically, over the last 8 years, he's developed and refined his business ideas/models, developed his "mad skillz" in programming, and worked on a number of difficult database solves to become the undisputed jedi master in cross-language web applications. Jack's a great guy to know and watch, and a lot of fun to have a beer with if you're ever in Prague. :) Bob Harrell

Practical.app (https://practical.app) is a complex food tracking app. The front end is a JavaScript/Vue.js Single Page App, which calls an API I built with Python/Django, backed by a Postgres database. In addition to the web frontend, the app has an Alexa skill (also written in Python) that allows users to control the app with voice commands. The app supports natural language searches such as “half a bag of Cheetos", customizable nutrient display using drag-and-drop, bar code scanning, and support for four languages (English, Czech, German, and Spanish).

Worked on the REST API written in Go (Golang). JavaScript programming (using the Vue.js framework and Chart.js). Conversion of the site to a responsive design that would work on both desktop and mobile. Database query optimization for the graphing components of the new dashboard. Built a system for agents in the field who are using iPhones/iPads devices to do data collection. This was a greenfield project with no existing code, so I built the server infrastructure including database design (Postgres) and designing and programming the API (using Python/Django Rest Framework on Google Cloud). I then built the iOS app for iPhone/iPad that the agents use to add data. Beta was delivered in February 2018 (two months after start of project). System went into wide deployment in June 2018 and is now used by hundreds of agents in five countries in Europe.

Okoli (okoli.com) was a platform to re-invent the group tour (a $20bn business) for the 21st century. Instead of large (25+ people) group tours, Okoli planned to organize tours of a maximum of eight people, led by experienced guides. The guides are independent contractors, who pay a small commission to Okoli for organizing the tours. One can think of it as "carpooling for private tours". The customer gets a semi-private tour for the cost of a typical large group tour. I helped develop the original business idea for Okoli, and did all the programming for the site and API (Python), including a bespoke accounting system written in PostgreSQL. I wrote the custom accounting system because we couldn't find an affordable off-the-shelf solution that could handle our complex multi-currency, multi-tax-jurisdiction, and FX gain/loss tracking requirements. Funding is challenging in the tours and activities sector, so Okoli was bootstrapped. Unfortunately, the site never launched.

Zendo was a secure messaging app offering true end-to-end encryption using symmetrical keys (almost all secure messaging uses less-secure asymmetrical keys). I wrote the iOS iPhone and iPad apps and managed the programmers building the Android app. I also designed and programmed the server backend (using Node.js and Erlang). TechCrunch called it "their new favorite secure messaging app". Nelso was an iOS app and website primarily targeting travelers to/in Europe. The app and site were available in 13 languages. Did all coding related to the website, primarily using Python, Django, and PostgreSQL. After the introduction of the iPhone (and the launch of the iOS SDK in 2008), Nelso changed focus to mobile travel. I wrote all the code for the company's large portfolio of apps for iOS, which had more than 4m downloads in the Apple App Store. Worked with another freelancer to complete the Android ports of the iOS apps. With zero marketing budget, helped build Nelso into one of the leading local search sites in the Czech Republic and Denmark, reaching over 100,000 unique users per month only a few months after launch. On-line marketing was conducted through the Nelso blog, Twitter, Facebook, and viral promotions such as the now-famous Prague beer price map.

Built a complex e-commerce platform for France Telecom’'s Polish subsidiary, and then launched this platform in eight other languages. All translations were handled by a web-based translation system that I wrote specifically for this project. Site was written primarily in Java (using Tomcat, Hibernate and Struts), and interfaced with a PostgreSQL Unicode database. In addition, made extensive use of RDBMS stored procedures, Ajax, CSS, and XML-based web services (including RSS and Atom). I was a co-founder and CTO of this B2C e-commerce retailer modeled on Amazon.com. Managed a staff in four offices in Central Europe (Prague, Budapest, Bratislava, and Warsaw). I wrote much of the software for a cross-border, cross-language, e-commerce platform. Site was written in Perl and Java, with Oracle as the RDBMS. PL/SQL was used extensively to speed up database operations. U.S. patent was filed for inventions resulting from this development. I helped raise $2.2m from private investors to fund the company'’s operations. After the “bubble” burst in 2000, funding dried up, and AlbumCity.com closed in 2003.
