Jan 2015 - May 2016
DefenseStorm is a cybersecurity startup specialising in real-time large-scale log data ingestion, analysis and alerting for financial institutions. In addition to backend and (web) frontend engineering duties, a primary focus of my work was product design and user experience (UX) of our client-facing management application. I worked closely with our CTO and product owner, engineering team, UX designer and end users to produce a cleanly designed and intuitive user interface capable of visualising and correlating very large real-time datasets, and enabling user management of alerts, alerting rules, incident tickets, machine learning data analysis features, threat database integration, and reporting. Senior Software Engineer

Oct 2014 - Jan 2015
Limelight Networks’ core business is its global content distribution network (CDN) and various SaaS products that sit atop that infrastructure, such as its Video Platform.I developed distributed backend systems atop dynamically scaled infrastructure, with very high degrees of availability, robustness, real-time monitoring and automated testing, to perform video ingestion, transcoding, delivery and live-streaming, digital rights management, ad-insertion, closed caption processing, billing automation, and to facilitate content management, using a service-oriented architecture of mostly Java systems. To accomplish these goals I worked routinely closely with development operations, network and test engineers, and product owners. Show less

Feb 2010 - Jan 2012
I was hired on at Intrepid to aid in the development of the Mobile Learning Platform (MLP), a Java-based Content Management System (CMS) geared toward the delivery of informal learning content. In addition to providing typical CMS functionality, MLP needed to perform well while being highly scalable (15000+ users), manage sophisticated content structures such as standards-compliant assessments and various flavours of multimedia, and do so via a web services API to be leveraged by user-facing web portals. In addition to development work on MLP, I took ownership of building our in-house web analytics system which is based on Open Web Analytics, an open source PHP project. Tasks included extending OWA to shadow MLP objects and their metadata, integrating the two systems, managing OWA deployments, importation and curation of data for our report developers, and contributing to the upstream open source project. In response to a manpower shortage, I then transitioned to our web development team where I was involved in developing Agile, the home-brew PHP framework at the core of each custom web portal that we built. Front end development of these websites was done with modern web UI technologies including JQuery, Backbone.js, Smarty and SASS. • Technologies: Java, JavaScript/AJAX, PHP, REST, MongoDB, MySQL, Postgres, ElasticSearch, Lucene, TestNG, JQuery, Backbone.js, RequireJS, Smarty, SASS, YUI, Git, Mercurial, Open Web Analytics and Alfresco • Strengths: self motivation and organisation, proactive task ownership, responsiveness to changing requirements, agile development methods, collaboration and communication skills Show less

SwRI is a nonprofit, applied research and development organization headquartered in San Antonio, TX. Of SwRI’s 3300+ employees, over 300 of them work in the Space Science and Engineering Division, one of the institute’s twelve operating divisions. This division specializes in the development of a variety of scientific instrumentation, data systems and advanced power supplies to operate aboard sounding rockets, satellites and space probes. I was a member of the Space Support Systems and Software group whose focus is building web-accessible software to support space science. We developed the widely used Project Information Management System (PIMS), plus various systems for science instrument mission planning and ground support, parts inventory and tracking, and automated software testing. Our clients included teams within SwRI as well as external clients such as NASA, Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the European Space Agency. • Technologies: Our typical development platform consisted of Java/J2EE (Servlets, JSP) and Oracle databases. We also employed: JavaScript/AJAX, XHTML, CSS, Perl, IDL, XML and MySQL. • Responsibilities: Being an integral part of a team only a dozen strong meant being responsible for a broad scope of tasks: requirements gathering and specification; design and implementation of data models, user interfaces and object-oriented software; documentation; unit/integration/regression testing; delivering software releases; and troubleshooting/support. • Strengths: Our group’s employment of several college interns allowed me to assume a managerial role as well as to resume one of a mentor. As rules I pay attention to detail, especially during specification of customer requirements, and place emphasis on producing well designed code that minimizes the cost of evolution and maximizes maintainability. Research Assistant
-
Jan 2005 - May 2007
I was offered a position in the VML by my professor Dr. Kay Robbins, who later became my advisor as I did research for my undergraduate honors thesis. • Web Development: Redesigned lab website and sub-sites for lab projects. Implemented an extensive content management system with PHP/MySQL to expedite site updates and the creation of new projects. • Support Programming: Developed improved GUI components using Java Swing for the Data Viewing System (Davis), a large scale data visualization package. • Honors Thesis: For my undergraduate honors thesis I conducted research in bioinformatics. The project focused on: data mining, structural analysis and visualization of DNA microarray gene expression data/metadata from disparate sources; development of data linking techniques; and building an intuitive user interface to complement a hypothesis-driven tool architecture. These concepts were implemented in Java to yield a new kind of microarray analysis and visualization tool (MicroMetal). MHI is the parent company of Techsurance.com, which develops web-based software for automating insurance quotes and applications. As a summer intern my work involved creating and maintaining software modules customized to our clients’ insurance products. I also redesigned our in-house reporting application with an object-oriented framework that simplified the prototyping of new report modules while maintaining backwards compatibility. Development platform: Linux, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript/AJAX, XHTML, CSS. Show less
