Bio
Michael Liang
I've known Jay for more than 10 years, having first met while I was at North Cascades National Park and he was working with the Student Conservation Association (of which, I am an alumnus). Our paths kept crossing at various youth and public lands events, and he continually impressed me with his enthusiasm, passion, and constant encouragement. For young people, those continual nudges and words of support make all the difference during the transition from school to career. Jay is on the forefront of youth and community engagement and his ideas and leadership will help us (public lands) succeed in the 21st century.

I collaborated with Jay in the WRMC leadership team from 2005 to 2015. I respect and am grateful for his contributions. Jay was willing to communicate challenging messages in a productive, patient and direct manner. He consistently brought a broad and strategic perspective to our planning. He helped organizations and individuals focus on human elements, particularly in areas of crisis response and bureaucratic change processes. Jay’s motivation and efforts created support and training for service conservation organizations, and the rest of the wilderness education community has been fortunate to benefit from him as well.

As Senior Director, Partnerships and Innovation, I work with a great team to create, build and maintain partnerships with resource managers, funders and community stakeholders in service of enlarging the impact of Northwest Youth Corps programs. Additionally, I work to create programming to meet the missions of our organization and our partners, focusing particularly on building programs to serve the most diverse participants possible. Our goal is to serve more youth, including from traditionally underserved communities by facilitating their engagement in conservation throughout the Northwest. These young people in turn will be the future conservation and community leaders where ever they live.

My long career with SCA began with roots in direct program management, starting as a crew leader for conservation service crews with teenagers, building trails in remote areas of the North Cascades and Yellowstone National Park. This led eventually to complete oversight of all of SCA field prgrams (3500 members in all 50 states) and lead risk management/safety officer for 15 years.
