Chip Jarvis
I was the technical lead for the service package for a storage product for which Jay had testing responsibility. I sat in the lab with Jay and other testers in order to verify function on the product being tested, and also in order to debug problems "real time" when the occurred. Although I was not a "manager", I did supervise in the sense of providing technical, and occasionally logistical, direction of the work being done by Jay and other developers and testers. I've found Jay to be very pleasant to work with. He's quite cooperative, and eager to learn. More than that, he takes initiative to do things which are not always obvious. He is also knowledgeable in server and storage administration, which for the work we were doing, was invaluable. It would have been one thing to say that Jay just did everything he was asked -- but he did much more. He asked the right questions, took ownership of the work he was doing, and provided valuable input -- even though he was not part of the initial product design. Often when we were working together, he suggested different approaches for the work that we were doing. Although we didn't always adopt the alternative approaches, sometimes we did. Jay was a valuable member of the team, and I'd be pleased to work with him again.

Jay is an outstanding systems engineer with an incredible amount to detail, swift response to any request and an overwhelming expertise in any platform, esp. Unix/Linux (one detail would be sufficient: he creates his own Linux distros). Highly recommended for any position where responsibility and expertise are required.
