Bio
Manny Macalalad
I was a volunteer catechist at Christ the Redeemer parish, where Jay served as one of the directors of religious education. I taught mostly 8th-graders and those taking their second year of preparation to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. As one of the directors, Jay dealt with diverse groups of parishioners, including clergy, staff, parents, catechists and students. Jay was particularly good at mediating between the different groups, especially the parents and the students. He provided guidance and instruction to the catechists and was a good source of support for the catechists whenever they dealt with students and parents who may have special needs or who need extra attention. His easy going manner made the work environment less stressful than usual. He also maintained information about religious education on the parish website, providing a good source of information for the catechists. Jay was especially good at keeping clear channels of communication among the catechists and between the catechists and parents in their respective classes. Jay was able to make quick decisions and offer constructive feedback to the catechists who might have questions about their classes. I happily endorse and recommend Jay for any work that utilizes his skills and knowledge.

Jay has been a professional colleague of mine for over 15 years. Among other projects I have had the pleasure to work with him on, he also was a guest lecturer in my theology classes at Marymount University. In this role, Jay was responsible for preparing and synthesizing information for classes of undergraduates (freshman) that was topic-oriented and capability appropriate for the class. He has strong presentation skills. In his lectures, he provided a comprehensive summary on topics relating to ecumenism and Catholic-Jewish relations. He was engaging and responded well to the students' questions. He is very collaborative and worked closely with me in preparing the lectures and we have had a good working relationship for many years. Jay is also an excellent writer and editor. He is always able to approach a writing topic with his audience clearly in mind and to adjust his style and presentation to their needs. I am happy to recommend him for any work or position which utilizes his excellent public speaking and writing skills.
