I am currently working on two projects, EcoMid and a St. Petersburg Environmental Protection Commission grant (EPC). The EcoMid project is an NIH grant in collaboration with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, University of Washington, and the University of South Florida. The project's goal is to understand the role of exposure to fecal matter on gut development in children. While the EPC grant's goal is to understand the influence of non-point source pollution of two rivers with a history of high concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria in the St. Petersburg, Fl region. My role in the EcoMid project is to validate eight microbial source tracking markers for their use in tracking sources of fecal matter on the study sites, advise on sampling strategy and sample processing, teach advanced qPCR techniques to graduate students, and troubleshoot qPCR runs.My role on the EPC grant is as a project manager. I coordinate between the EPC personnel and USF faculty, plan sampling strategies, manage graduate and undergraduate researchers, process samples for the presence of E. coli and microbial source tracking markers, analyze and present results, and write reports for dissemination to the community.

As part of the NSF MERA project, I coordinated and led the water sampling in Costa Rica. Working alongside personnel from the national water laboratory I collected grab samples, employed ultrafiltration techniques to concentrate microbes in water, and gathered environmental data for analysis. In the lab, I extracted genetic material from PEG precipitated samples for the synthesis of cDNA and the analysis of HF183, PMMoV, norovirus, and adenovirus via qPCR and RT-qPCR.
