Working with Javed has truly been a pleasure. As a co-worker, Javed has proven himself to be one of those rare, multitalented forces of nature who can easily assume many different roles, even in parallel. As a business architect, he has played a critical role in creating business opportunities to apply the most cutting-edge machine learning and natural language processing technologies to our project. As an engineer, he has skillfully designed domain taxonomies that a machine can learn well, so as to extract informative entities from text with a high degree of accuracy. As a product manager, he has helped the team focus, and re-focus, on the features that actually matter to the end user, helping to keep the team on a useful path.

- Built a Python package to train embeddings that encapsulate large bodies of natural language text about entities. - Used a generic task to train the embeddings—a classifier to determine which entity a sentence from the text is about, given the sentence and a small set of entity embeddings. - Demonstrated that the resulting embeddings are useful for a broad range of tasks, such as gender classification, occupation classification, and political preferences for prominent people based on their Wikipedia articles. - Demonstrated cross-domain usefulness by training embeddings on Yelp reviews about businesses, and then using the embeddings to predict the businesses’ categories (e.g. ‘restaurant’, ‘shopping’, ‘home services’, etc.).
