Dr. Gerry Willis

I have known Jason professionally and personally for fifteen years, and during that time he has demonstrated to me and many others his remarkable abilities as a leader and a motivator, and as an effective educator. While he spent many years as an active contributor for Information Technology, perhaps Jason’s strongest talent was as a digital communications professional for University Relations. Thanks in part to his ability to interact with constituents in a teachable way, I saw him on many occasions working with students and administrators alike, and having talked with more than a few who interfaced with him, I can attest that Jason had a very positive impact on them. Due in large part to Jason’s talents in Digital Communications, he was promoted to Senior Director of Digital Communications and External Relations. Once again Jason’s abilities as a talented, creative professional and effective leader showed through. Jason was highly effective in this role and elevated the entire department he managed, along with the staff he supervised. The work Jason did in this position attest to his abilities. This is a particularly demanding position, as Jason has to oversee a number of professional staff, and manage the day-to-day challenges that frequently arise in Digital Communications. Suffice it to say that those of us who worked with Jason had complete faith in his abilities, relied regularly on his expertise, and I was deeply impressed with the enthusiasm, energy, and professionalism that Jason brought to his position. As a colleague and friend, I have also been aware of Jason’s second career as lecturer teaching remotely for both Northeastern and Southern New Hampshire. His initiative to engage in teaching and learning outside of his full-time position was not surprising to me given the time and attention he so often has given to those around him in the workplace.

I had had the pleasure of working with Jason Black for the past 12 years that I have been employed at Salve Regina University. In the world of undergraduate admissions, the advancements in technology are critical in reaching out to potential students and meeting enrollment goals. As new technologies have been introduced to the university (social media, online registrations, application reviews online), Jason has been there to oversee the implementation of new projects for our office and the entire university. Just glancing at his resume, anyone can see Jason has an incredible knowledge of his field. What I was pleasantly surprised to see on his resume though were his faculty appointments at Southern New Hampshire University and Northeastern University. It’s a perfect combination of all the things that Jason is passionate and knowledgeable about. There are many professionals in the field with a knowledge of web based applications, communications, and information systems management; however, there are not many that have the same approachability and accessibility as Jason. One of the qualities that I immediately noticed about Jason many years ago was how easy he is to communicate with and how willing he is to share his knowledge with others. With the many projects we have worked on together, his patience in explaining details (especially to someone who is not technologically savvy) and helping others understand the technical-side of our operations is appreciated more than words can ever say. While I have never taken a class with him, I can only imagine what an incredible teacher he must be. He has my highest recommendation in anything he pursues!
