Assistant Quality Assurance Officer
-
Jan 2009 - Nov 2011
As the Assistant Quality Assurance Officer (AQAO) on board the USS Scranton (SSN 756) I was responsible for implementing and managing the ship’s Sub-Safe and Quality Assurance (QA) maintenance program. I was required to analyze current quality assurance and Sub-Safe maintenance practices on the ship and developed training programs that ensured the highest quality methods for preventive and corrective maintenance repairs. I oversaw the implementation of a more efficient qualification and training program that resulted in the correction of several Sub-Safe and quality assurance related maintenance and training deficiencies ensuring TYCOM certification for the submarine for its ensuing deployments and underways. The enhanced training program resulted in 30 sailors being qualified in varies specialties including maintenance, QA inspector, QA planner, and QA work center supervisor allowing for maintenance flexibility throughout the submarine. My responsibilities also included checking the progress of work, reviewing, accepting and at times rejecting the work of the ship’s QA maintenance personnel. I was the point of contact for the submarine’s Executive Officer, Commanding Officer as well as for Squadron Six Quality Assurance Officer to ensure that we, as a team and ship, were meeting all Sub-Safe and Quality Assurance naval requirements.

Work Center Supervisor/ Electronics Techinician
-
Jan 2006 - Nov 2011
As an Electronics Technician (ET) I installed, administered and maintained onboard communications, navigation and certain combat control systems. Using schematics and tech manuals, I performed preventive and corrective maintenance on various submarine navigation and communication equipment including the military radar (AN/BPS-15H), Ring Laser Gyro Navigation System (AN/WSN-7A/7B), Voyage Management System (VMS), Ballast Control Panel (BCP) and Combat Control System (BYG-1). As a technician I was responsible for correcting over 30 electrical and mechanical problems and deficiencies in the Ship’s Control Pane (SCP) allowing the USS Scranton to remain on an extended seven month deployment. I was able detect and correct last minute technical problems between VMS and the Combat Control System that allowed the ship to execute Tactical Land-Air Missile (TLAM) operations. As Work Center Supervisor (WCS) I led a team of eight technicians that were responsible for all operational and administrative aspects of over 20 systems and sub-systems for submarine navigation and communication. My responsibilities as WCS included developing and implementing the weekly, monthly and yearly preventive maintenance schedule as well as performing spot checks on the technician’s performance ensuring the correct process was being adhered to. I coordinated with contractors and outside maintenance activities for assistance with corrective repairs that were beyond the ability of the ship’s crew. I oversaw the training and qualification programs of the eight technicians on my team ensuring each member had the proper qualifications and the required knowledge of our equipment and systems. I supervised the complete electronic overhaul of the submarine’s external hydraulic system as well as numerous electrical repairs to the ships warning and indicating systems.
